Battles

Posted about 5 years ago
I'm picky with math rock: it's pretty much Shellac and some Don Cab for me. However, I just found out about Battles (hat tip: GvB), and I really like what I've heard so far.I recommend checking out the track "Tras," which is available on their myspace. Their first LP is coming out April 2nd. Here's the video of the first single:

  1. mktackabery says I'm tempted to buy this just to drive my husband batshit because he would totally not get it, but it would pay him back for making me listen to Kiss. This is my first exposure to math rock; I don't get the name, but then again, I never understood how Brits living in housing projects could make jungle music, so I'm the wrong person to talk to about genres. . . This basically sounds like music for brats on Ritalin. Which would be a great name for a band, I just realized. So can you explain to me what the hell math rock is?

  2. seanlandis says Explaining smacks of effort. I'll let the internet do its job: "Math rock is a style of rock music that emerged in the late 1980s. It is characterized by complex, atypical rhythmic structures, stop/start dynamics and angular, dissonant riffs."

  5. tybees says Yes, they create a fantastic groove. And I love the drummer's red shirt + yellow drumset. I just saw this on GvB myself and was gonna run over here and post about it - luckily I did a quick search to find your post first!

  6. Oatmeal says 2 weeks late, but this is hot. I don't know a damned thing about math rock, but these fellas are on the cover of my new XLR8R and I listened to the single at least five times in the car today off the sampler CD. I will be picking this up, it has a nice punk rock feel to it, probably the drumming. Incidentally I learned that the drummer used to be the drummer in HELMET. Remember them?
