I'm a huge fan of David Bazan.
But.
The lyrics to "Selling Advertising" strike me as unfair. Here's a performance of it:
Musically, it's beautiful. And he raises some good points. I don't understand most music reviews. I think lots of critics care about seeming clever more than making sense or being informative. A charitable interpretation is that they know more about music than I do. Probably, though, they're just peddling bullshit.
Still, I don't like to hear a successful artist belittle those who don't have the good fortune to earn money as an artist. Sure, reviewing music is less important than making music, but we can't all be important. Hell, I'm not even important enough to review for a living. From where I'm sitting, that'd be a pretty sweet gig.
So I wrote a response as if I worked at Pitchfork, set to his song. Sorry if you wind up listening to it. My voice isn't pretty:
I Sell Advertising
I'm not creative
I'll never be
Though I've tried incessantly
My effort exceeds my ability
Now I'm at Pitchfork
Yeah you got me
Did I pan your songs?
Well, it beats temping
You grant it's hard to be original
Still you underestimate
Its degree of difficulty
I'd give an eight-point-eight
"The path of least resistance"
You misinterpreted
It's not that I've been lazy
It's that I'm just no good
So if my words upset you, David
Just recall
You get to earn your living
From making others happy
Meanwhile I'm
Stuck selling advertising
At least it's self-effacing
There's a reason I reluctantly review
I am not as talented as you
I wish it weren't true

Her new album Songs III: Bird on the Water is out next week, and has been christened by the Powers That Be as powerful good echo-folk. Need more convincing? Espers is her back-up band on the album.
Here's Silvia, a song off the new album. You can find other tracks from it if you look hard enough.

I like it. Reminds me of Helium or Hope Sandoval.
I'm picky with math rock: it's pretty much Shellac and some Don Cab for me. However, I just found out about Battles (hat tip: GvB), and I really like what I've heard so far.
I recommend checking out the track "Tras," which is available on their myspace. Their first LP is coming out April 2nd. Here's the video of the first single:

I'm tempted to buy this just to drive my husband batshit because he would totally not get it, but it would pay him back for making me listen to Kiss.
This is my first exposure to math rock; I don't get the name, but then again, I never understood how Brits living in housing projects could make jungle music, so I'm the wrong person to talk to about genres. . . This basically sounds like music for brats on Ritalin.
Which would be a great name for a band, I just realized. So can you explain to me what the hell math rock is?
Explaining smacks of effort. I'll let the internet do its job:
"Math rock is a style of rock music that emerged in the late 1980s. It is characterized by complex, atypical rhythmic structures, stop/start dynamics and angular, dissonant riffs."
saw them open for prefuse 73 a couple of years ago. looking forward to the new record. i really like the single/vid.
