In _the Stones: The Acclaimed Biography_, author Philip Norman boldly stated that Jumpin' Jack Flash was "undisputedly the Stones' best performance on record." Well, if you grant that, this statement below is gonna be even harder to beat: Can't You Hear Me Knocking has the best riff that Keith Richards ever wrote. The crunchy, meandering riff sounds raw and full of venom, ranting just like the junkie in the lyrics who couldn't get his next dope; if a guitarist can make his guitar talk, that's gotta be it.

Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlin of Guns n' Roses joined the Stones onstage for "Salt of the Earth." Both frontmen blazing at their top forms, this is one of my all-time favorite live clips. Please enjoy!

Here's a tune from the Kinks' self-titled debut album. Despite the nothingness of the lyrics, it is a catchy, melodic tune...kinda like the Beatles' in their very early days. That is to say, its value lies not in its musicianship but in its simplicity... Oh, and it is also a song which the record companies will include in those "The Best of" compilations every now and then.

Your observation: "That is to say, its value lies not in its musicianship but in its simplicity…" is so correct. A brick is always and only a brick, but bricks build magnificent temples and shrines to ingenuity. A chord is a chord, a chord progression can be magic on the fourty seventh million play if it's coupled with the proper lyric, the inspired performance. Good call, dude.
i love these boys
To deadmandeadman, I couldn't agree with you more! I also like the pictures you conjure up. You've absolutely got an unique style in your writing. I've learned so much from you on both the philosophy of music and English.
To steve simon, Thanks for dropping by! Glad you liked it.
