OK OK- I know . But I have my reasons. . First of all, she has one heck of an instrument . Vocally , her range and breath control are amazing . Also, as a young Latina with very little formal education and a lot of cultural capital, she occupies a very unique position in American culture . Especially because she insists on using that capital to make the records she wants .
Her label didn't want to release Stripped (the last album) but she said it was her clearest expression of her ideas and what she , as an artist need to talk about. . She wanted to talk to women about harnessing their power - whether it be sexually , or in accepting one's body , or mentoring each other.
On this new album she says she was channeling Ella Fitagerald and Billie Holliday - that she wanted to bring glamour back to the music business.Sure , it's easy to say she's a corporate tool and it's just hype - but is that just another way of marginalizing her because she's female and undereducated? Green Day is also on a major label- if Billie Joe Armstrong made a statement concerning what his album meant to him - would he be dismissed so automatically? Just a thought .Brad

I have to say: first reaction to her new album being a double album... impressed. Not sure why. Ambition on this level always impresses me on a gut level, before I get a chance to think about it.
I am not sure I have ever liked Christina but I'm not afraid to check it out and see. That being said: not at all a fan of "SexyBack" by JT. Maybe the rest of the album stands it up.
Somebody hipped me to Dean Gray/American Edit.... I haven't had that kind of immediate Wow!! reaction since I discovered Astral Weeks. Problem is, I'm trying to buy it - and I can't find it available for purchase . It's amazing. Mashups - a lot of it using Green Day , but including things like speeches , commercials TV show jingles all in the mix. Also he manages to mash 6 or 7 songs , creating bridges with them. As someone qho does some sound design - this is impossible stuff. Right now American Jesus and Novocaine Rhapsody (yes , he riffis off of Queen) are my favorites out of what my friend played me . I'd say run out and buy it - except ya can't. :( Grrr.
