As a young man, I abhorred country music. Sure, I'd sneak a peek at Hee Haw for the daisy dukes crew, but for the most part I equated it with the interminable vacation travels when Dad would crank the twang and forbid us kids from even cracking the windows in the air conditioned yet thick smoke filled pontiac station wagon.
Then, as the seventies crept to the decades end, my idol of the day did the unthinkable. Elvis Costello released "Almost Blue" in an apparent attempt to end his sparkling new wave career. I was obligated to buy and listen, out of respect for the soon-to-be-forgotten. I slid the tape in with much trepidation and discovered a whole new side of the tracks.
Don't ya just love the "Here goes my friggin' career" cover??
