Once Twice In A Lifetime
(that's how I wanted the title to read)

There was a great article in the Life & Arts Sunday paper (remember those??) yesterday. Arts/Culture reporter Ron Rollins expanded a plug for Tom Moon's new book "1,000 Recordings to Hear Before You Die" into a lament for the bygone days the local record store, and how much missed are the environs of musical discovery that were common 25 yrs ago. You can read the article here. He closes with:

"I don't mean to be all old-guy misty over this, but I do miss the days when thinking and talking about music in an open forum, a gathering place for meeting and dialogue, was a big part of the music itself. I don't think we have that anymore..."

He's not looking in quite the right places, is he? See how good we've got it???

He's just a few clicks away from Nirvana..or Kanye West..or Sparks..or whatever the heck he wants to talk about. Although, the human part was pretty cool.

Yes, but other than the face-to-face, I was amazed how, on reflection, this is virtually (heh-heh) the same thing as that. Should I leave him stranded, or e-mail a lifeline??

You are correct,sir..I think he needs a hand. He just hasn't been able to mesh the two streams..I admit, I still like having a hard copy of music, but I am not shunning the digtal world. I bet he'll figure it out soon enough.  All the folks like us who were leaning up against the counter at the store shooting the breeze are typing away over here.

I mean it would be one hell of a record store that would have as many folks as MOG hanging out.

Probably spend more time on MOG than hanging out at the remaining record stores in Berkeley. Like Cody, I prefer hard copy and even vinyl, depending on the  mastering. (Wilco, Dylan, Steve Winwood sound excellent, vinyl version better than CD) but will cherry pick something obscure or a single track I gotta have from i-tunes. As a long-standing degenerate music head, it is wonderful to get to know others of my ilk.

Hey Bob! There aren't many good shops left here around Dayton, Oh. Did just find a nicely stocked kiosk at our local flea market, and the guy running it has the "vibe". It'll be nice while it lasts.
