Poison+Antidote=Extra Life

Posted over 3 years ago

There are moments when I know, without fail, just how amatuer a musician I am. And, in the same breath, thankful that there are people out there as daring and creative as Charlie Looker (ex of Dirty Projectors) so we can all keep our craniums suitably scratched.

The sounds wrung(rung) out by Charlie's band Extra Life are not conventionl listening. Yet, their organic nature likens them to the unpredictability of nature herself. At one moment you are basking in a sun drenched meadow, the next you are balancing on slippery rocks trying to cross a stream without falling in. Or, in the case of the set "Secular Works", fighting the teeth of a monsoon.

There is a similarity of approach and discipline to Robert Fripp in this music, without the rigid and electronic feel. There are more words than I could ever fathom stringing together on Extra Life here:

The most telling statement, towards the end of the piece-"Secular Works is a hard dose to swallow and is as constructive as it is deconstructive, but is a must-listen for anybody who considers themselves a true music fan."

Selections from the recent cd "Secular Works" can be found on the myspace page.

As antidote, I offer proof of the breadth of talent this young man has; struggling to give us a beautiful, virtually pop single, you can hum between mother nature's whims.

Scott, now is my time to prowl your MOG [cue evil laughter] starting with this one, which had me at the brightly dark title. and then of course the post really works, complete with namechecking Robert Fripp, probably deserved. and then of course the tracks really work.

verdict: you do not disappoint. on to the next post.

Look at you, picking up my late-comment bad habits!
I'm really fond of this one, esp. the way he uses his voice more like an instrument. I picked this up at http://pukekos.blogspot.com/
, one of the more underground blogs I've found...I may have mentioned this before...just about the weekend hereabouts.
BTW, Nick and Chuck are both "in", watch the darkside in the next 24

Scott, you're right on about him using his voice like an instrument. and btw, i love that idea, it goes so well with the biomechanical wings i am trying to have of late.

thanks for the pukekos link, haven't been but will soon check it out.

and i know! i have fallen into the late commenting pit! it's all i could do not to completely "ignore" my Trusteds. too many Moggers, too little time!
