Apparently, The Beep Seals do not know (or care) what year it is. And, they are doing their best to confuse the hell out of us. Did the Beatles really disband? Are there some unrelesed Squeeze singles hiding in a dusty corner? Have The Zombies and Beach Boys ever recorded together? Did the 80's end? Or start yet? These guys use power pop like silly putty, stretching it into familiar, comfortable shapes. They craft melody and harmony that cause long-unused neuons to fire - at times in reverse. They sing in delish-style of utterly nothing, backing it up with crunch and strum that makes you fine with it all. "I sat at home and got nothin' done - 'cause I was all alone now-how-w - 'cause I was all alone now-how-w I wrote a song and it's this one - 'cause I was all alone now-how-w - 'cause I was all alone now-how-w" Now, if that's not Seinfeldesque, I don't know what is. Like the Rutles and Spinal Tap, this is musical parody that transcends itself. Maybe all the junior high school dances will be swaying to "An Opening In the Curtains..." this fall.
