The Dub Experiments-Explode Together into XTC

Posted about 1 year ago
From 1978 to 1980, Andy Partridge of XTC took the tapes from their latest "Drums and Wires" recording back to the studio and used them as his own personal dub source. The results? "Explode Together"s compilation of those dub experiments. Fans of the typical guitar driven posh pop XTC sounds ought be careful here. This set really strips the sound down and builds brand new layers of rhythm from the remnants. Yet, putting the traditional aside, there is much to sink your ears into.

  3. AA Coppertop says The red button is now a little clock. Tee hee. Unlike the members of Pylon, I don't eat Dub for breakfast. That is to say, I'm not much of a Dub fan (love The Clean, don't love their endless Dub workouts), but then what I'm hearing so far from Andy is nothing I'd have thought to classify that way myself. A nice find.

  5. zarpex says This was really when Andy Partridge's musical genius was starting to heat up. Personally, I think less ??Drums and Wires?? when I listen to it than ??Black Sea?? - if you lay your head against this song, "Living through Another Cuba" can be heard approaching from beyond the horizon; elements of "The Somnambulist" are in there, too, and "Respectable Street" as well. And what the devil is dub exactly, anyway?

  7. scotfree says Cody - I was surprised how tasty myself! Coptop - read that Andy really enjoyed this project, and you can tell. Very inventive, and different sounding eh? Dale - Black Sea is my fave, but they put out a lot of fine tracks Zarpex - your reading my mind man! as far as dub goes, the clinical from the wiki reads "Dub is a form of music which evolved out of reggae in the 1960s. The dub sound consists predominantly of instrumental remixes of existing recordings and is achieved by significantly manipulating and reshaping the recordings, usually by removing the vocals from an existing music piece, emphasizing the drum and bass frequencies or 'riddim', adding extensive echo and reverb effects, and dubbing occasional snippets of lyrics from the original version." I'd say some parts of that definition don't quite fit this project, but ,eh, artistic license. Ilay - You know, I don't neccessarily hear the punk, but one of the reviews I read on Amazon said that too. I'm not the most scholarly punkster :)

  8. poebegone says hmm. if you lose the dominant dubby sound and lower the vocal timber a tad, it's The Clash circa London Calling, Sandinista!, Combat Rock. even the lyrics. is it just me...?

  9. scotfree says No, it's just slow me. I revisited it this morning with your comment in mind. I get it! I may just have to crank Sandinista! in honor (as if I need a reason for that!)
