Who are the Yoshido Brothers? Known as Yoshida KyÅdai in Japan,"They are a pair of brothers and performers of the traditional Japanese music style of Tsugaru-jamisen which originated in northern Japan."They team up their traditional instruments (sort of like a banjo on speed) with other regional musical styles and instruments. The results are a dramatic and addictive hodge-podge, sounds fresh to these ears!!The wiki also says their music has been used in recent Wii ads.Their "Rising" videowant something a bit more beat?here's "Change" with Monkey Majikwhich leads me off to find out....who the hell are Monkey Majik??

Hey, man, you delivered the sh%t tonight! When the audio first started playing I thought it was going to be some kind of alt country / bluegrass sort of thing which I could dig and I did dig it. Then, "Rising" was something else altogether and then they broke down into that funk thang and I just screamed with elation. I'm scared to press play on the second vid, but here goes. "Change" is good, but not heart-stopping good which is good as my heart needs to recover from the shock of the unadulterated Yoshida Brothers. Great scouting!

agreed. listened to "Overland Blues" (and actually this artist period) for the first time tonight. from the get-go, the "Rising" video was one of those that made the hair stand up on my arms and my spirt cry hell yeah!! it really rocks! thanks for checkin' it!

Those brothers can funk your head off with their banjo style instrument. It is funny to try and recognise their influences. I can sense some Sergio Leone but maybe it's only me.
Thanks for the intro, Scot.

I have to disagree with the "Banjo on speed" comment merely because it is almost impossible to squeeze more notes into a short time span than a banjo played in the traditional style can do. But a very interesting post. I liked that first video more, as Monkey Majik seems to overwhelm the second one - assuming MM is kind of a Japanese pop group.

whoah. can't watch the vids but did play the track. i feel like i just stepped into the set of a spaghetti western anime - to pick up from Bartleby, Sergio Leone doing Cowboy Bebop. i guess that makes this ...sushi western music? very interesting!

B - Don't know enough about Sergio to re-com ya, but I will check that. These bros. certainly have some funky fingers, eh?
D - It's the way they play the darn things Mark. Guess I shoulda said "banjo player". Anyway, I'd like to see em quadret with Roy Clark and Glen Campbell.
P - you gotta see the vids for contrast. It's like these guys are chameleons, addapting to whatever genre they dive into. And you might dig that last one. Monkey Majik flow much (IMHO) like Tahiti 80.
