VU covers are always a thorny issue for me because I adore the VU and anyone trying to replicate their songs even as a homage kind of grates. That said, Cheap Trick is not anyone and the guitar makes it worthwhile... Thanks for this wistful cover.

Agreed Michael, you'd think this would fall a bit flat. But somehow, they pull it off. I'm a big CT fan, and I was surprised. I do think that Tom's less-perfect-than-Robin's vocal was a good decision.

Pensive yearnings can lead to the most amusing conversations, esp. among your rock star types. Liten as Robin, Tom and Bun E. "discuss" Rick's lifestyle choices.

Scott, i dig it. i am also picky on my VU coverers and i certainly agree that the guitar completely works it, and that the more "flawed/human" vocals (nothing like i remember from CT when i was younger) was good thinking.

Yeah, every now and then, CT let bassist Tom Peterson sing one, but aside from Nielson's signature guitar heroics, they are really defined by the power/ precision par-excellance of lead vocalist Robin Zander. Somehow, Peterson got it in his head that he could be the front man, and left the band in the 70's to go solo-nowhere. But then, CT themselves kinda slumped into obscurity with a number of release that were ok but formulaic. Peterson returned with '88s "Lap Of Luxury" just in time for them to hit it big again with "The Flame". So, who is the star here???

Hey, great song and a good place to start. That one kick-started the band back from oblivion. But those first 5 studio albums?? Cheap Trick(1st self titled (yes, there's a second one!))-In Color-Heaven Tonight-Dream Police-All Shook Up (and then - of course - the live Budokan) As the high priestess of rhythmic noise, you got some coool catchin' up to do!!

lay the pressure on me, why don't you? ;D i have waaay too much catching up to do. that's why i'm working on becoming an immortal. calling all vampires out there...

aannndd, could CT have seeded the ground for all this great shoegaze/ dreampop genre? check "Mandocello" from their first. An odd song for them, don't think they ever did anything else quite like it.
more cowbell, please. Have ya seen "Balls of Fury"? Watched it last night, and there's a scene at the end where the whole cast, including Walken, are kareokeeing Def Leppard. I was sooo hoping he would have a cowbell before it was all over.
Good VU covers are tough to find. Right on the heels of the decadent Ziggy Stardust excess, Mick Ronson gave up this gem...

While looking for Cheap Trick references I came across this gem.
Like Ilay I'm picky when it comes to VU. Fussy even.
Funny thing is I somehow knew you would have more Trick tunes on Mog. Look for a write up about Rock and Rule in the future.
Curse you and that damned BOC post.
I think this is okay. Not my bag though. Really, it seems forced. Almost like a barroom cover.
