Back on the Horse

I once knew an aquaintance of a friend who was quite the outdoor daredevil. He got our close-knit group of stoners involved in rappelling. For those going "??" rappelling is the sport of climbing down mountains with ropes. You use a series of special chain links like pullys to slowly descend.
We would travel a couple hours away to Daniel Boone National forest in Kentucky and spend the weekend deep in the woods, climbing between puffs. Fortunately, no one ever got hurt. We would race up the trail to the natural bridge and fling the ropes down on either side....until the rangers would come by and shoo us off to safer slopes.

Daniel Boone National Forest (and all national forests, I think) were unique at that time because you could hike in and camp anywhere. Any firewood found on the ground was permissible. So you could get real remote, ya know??
Once, our crew was hiking down a steep ravine. When we came to the bottom, there was a small, flat, triangular grassy patch where two brooks came together. And sitting there cross-legged at his private campsite was a lone hippy (?). Pretty sure he was tripping his balls off, but he was very congenial and took us back to a cave he had found. good times.

I was tripping on a rectangular piece of concrete in an alternate universe (Detroit) at the time, but the story sounds strangely familiar..........
