THE MUSIC BLOGGING HIVE MIND

Ghost of Christmas Past

Posted 8 months ago

My Mom was a pretty cool cat. She knew the music was important to me. In early December of 1972, I was browsing the vinyl at the Ayrway shopping center in Richmond, Indiana. I was drooling over this high-priced ($12.99 as I remember) import compilation of T. Rex's earliest electric recordings. I wanted it bad, but maybe someday-someway I'd have it: but for now, my three bucks wasn't gonna cut it. Besides, there were Christmas presents to buy - it wasn't the season for me me me.
Sure, I knew Mom was in the store somewhere - but it was a big place, and she was off filling her cart with household necessities. Or so I thought.
Come Christmas morning, guess what I unwrapped - to my wondrous surprise!

    Mom's are cool like that.

My mom never gave me music (unless you count the stuff she would listen to daily) as a present. I do remember my first 10 speed. It was a red Schwinn. Before that bike I was cruising her old one. I swear it was made in 1946, painted baby blue, and could go over terrain all the other bikes couldn't thanks to the solid rubber tires. I got beat down verbally by the 'richer' kids. They stopped thier laughing when I hit a jump. I was able to get easy air with that thing. Just don't ask me to remember how I did it. That had to be the late 70's.

Rex has a great vibe. Thanks Scott.

Kind of funny you'd be the first in here Chris...I came real close to giving you props up there for prompting some "Mom" memories. I need to get over there and say "hi" to yours.
Not really sure how my mom did it - she certainly wasn't in tune with the culture - but the teens brought some memorable gifts. I also remember some John Mayall and Faces cassettes tucked in the 'ol stocking.
You and your fancy Schwinn...you trying to get under my skin or what? Wanna hear some real irony? I work for Huffy...seriously!!
    Thanks you man.

I predict that having my mom here will spur more posts stemming from the 'Jacopetti Effect'.

Come on brother, tag it. It's to much of a coincidence. Do it for Annie and Mr. Jacopetti.

Having my mom on MOG will effect me in a big way.

Bolan was way ahead of his time & has been so influential in the world of music. Great, funny little story . . .

That's such a sweet story :) My mother used to take me to the movies a lot when I was little, and she would also take me cassette shopping. I remember one night specifically when it was snowing hard, and yet there we were, satisfying our art thirst :)

Yessir Augusts, when ya wanna boogie there's not much better. Adore all the early electric stuff, but I have a real soft spot for "Tanx". Some vivid memories accompany that set.

Thanks for sharing that, Anna. Snow-shopping is the best. Cassettes? Ha! I still got a box of those in the basement I need to go through...

True dat! So many current bands owe their career to Mr. Bolan(yes I'm looking at you The Fratellis).

That's funny, I remember one of the first times I was listening to The Fratellis "Baby Fatelli" and was pleasantly surprised to hear them channeling Slade in the chorus!
