Sunday Under Covers: Alice Cooper Band perform Rolf Harris

Posted over 4 years ago
How and why The Alice Cooper band chose "Sun Arise" by Rolf Harris to cap off the unnerving insanity of their Love It To Death lp is quite enigmatic. I just realized after typing it, that I don't really know what that word means - but it sounds right. "Sun Arise", by the author of the cuddly "Tie Me Kangaroo Down", is an inspirational anthem to our source of heat and light and the power the old sun has to create each new day. original lyrics:Sun arise, she bring in the morning.Sun arise, bring in the morning, fluttering her skirts all around. Sun arise, she come with the dawning.Sun arise, come with the dawning, spreading all the light all around. Sun arise, on the kangaroo paw.Sun arise, on the kangaroo paw, glistening the dew all around. Sun arise, filling all the hollows,Sun arise, filling all the hollows, lighting up the hills all around. Sun arise, come with the dawning,Sun arise, she come every day.Sun arise, bring in the morning,Sun arise, every, every, every, every, day.She drive away the darkness, every day,Drive away the darkness,Bringing back the warmth to the ground. Sun arise, oh, oh,Sun arise, oh, oh,Spreading all the light all around. Sun arise, bring in the morning.Sun arise, bring in the morning, spreading all the light all around. Seems like a perfect match to me.

  1. deadmandeadman says Alice Cooper had more depth than they're generally given credit for. Actually they weren't given any credit for depth at all. Quite the contrary! Considered by the high-brow critics of the day to be lightweight Shock-Rock, A. C. none the less sold oodles of records to disaffected lonely frightened (& frightening) youth everywhere. "Killer" is still a fine slab of rocknroll! Dead Babies notwithstanding.

  2. scotfree says The original band were a smashed up mess of what may be one of the most original sounds American rock ever found. In high school, they were my obsession, and I'm reliving that a bit at the mo. Alice may have *the* best *rock* voice in the pantheon.

  4. Bartleby says My, Scot! You've got a knack for digging up some really likeable nuggets from people I wouldn't have thought of. Alice Cooper with so little make-up I almost didn't recognise him. Cheers mate :)

  6. scotfree says OK - time to quit doubting - I had the enigma in proper context. DMDM - Easy as it would be to shrug and just agree with your comment, I must add - while there is probably a lot of truth in the type of AC fan you depict, in my circles from back then the were revered as innovators of dark, powerful, sexual energy - far from disaffected and frightened. I hung with a band who's sets were primarily AC songs, and they/we were the most popular (if perhaps feared) kids in the school. There was a tradition of selling off lps that had fallen out of personal rotation to kids 3 or 4 years younger, and my "customers" were always pleading for the AC discs. They, as well, were not wallflowers by any means. "Killer" was Lester Bangs pick for top lp of '71. Missjunk - yes, a bit ,uh, enigmatic for that band, eh? :) Bartleby - glad you liked that one. Works really well as the closer of an lp about mental disorder - you know - the sun also rises! Brendan - the greatest hits are that, but I find the deeper lp cuts display the songwriting and persona of these guys more vividly. They climbed on the tour bus and floored it 'till they plunged right over the edge!
