WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Dear Merle Haggard,

Posted over 2 years ago
As part of our summer tradition, my wife and I take my Mother-in-law to the annual County fair concert. This year, Mr. Haggard is performing. So tonight's shaping up to be a less-than-anticipated event in my book. Been practicing my "yeee-hawws" all day long. Sure hope old Merle plays his cover of this old Bob Wills classic, as it's the only thing in the catalogue I could find to sink my teeth into. Don't worry about Mom, she'll have her dentures in.

  3. deadmandeadman says Man you know I luv ya, but get yer head out your ass and listen. This is an American classic. Merle on a good night puts on a hell of a show. And as a Songwriter, no one navigates the terrain of the broken souls and little heroes like Mr Haggard. With a voice like a dried tobacco leaf and a face like parchment Merle Haggard can take you deep deep into the heart of a life we'll never know, but everyone's been there. I take it you won't read this until later or more likely on the morrow. Write me, let me know if you found anything to enjoy.

  5. scotfree says Max - We did, thanks!! GC - I was laughing to myself when we went to pick Mom up. She reminded us she had to put her dentures in before we left!! DMDM - I do stand corrected sir! I like everything,I'm just not that familiar with Merle, but it was a great country show. Super tight band. And you are right, it was a good night for Merle. Around the middle of the set, he spun into Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison". And he played tunes from the new comp he recorded with Willie and Ray Price. I particularly liked how much a member of the band he was, his guitar was way up in the mix and he handled most of the solos himself. And his voice was strong and expressive, captivating. He modded the lyrics in "That's The Way Love Goes" to include the line "honey, don't worry about what George Bush does". Late in the show, it started to lightning. As Merle launched into "Okie" he said "I think I felt a raindrop". And it escalated. 3/4ths of the way through the song, the heavens erupted into a downpour, no place for an encore. We were soaked to the bone by the time we got to the car. Everybody got their money's worth and more, a free shower! yrral - Well, while he didn't play "Cherokee Maiden", when it was time to introduce the band, Merle picked up the fiddle and launched into Bob Will's "Take Me Back To Tulsa". He was pretty good on that thing, and looked like he was having a helluva time with that song!!
