Take one part moody synths, add a bit of snare drums, a pinch of looming vocal samples, a smattering of hoodies, and a massive wallop of wobbly, pounding bass, and you've got dubstep, a style of electronic music cultivated on the streets of South London. MOG recently partnered with SCION to create a dubstep fiend's dream come true: Dubstep Fantasy Camp. Four winners from across the nation were flown to New York City to be immersed in a two-day training session with some of the genre's brightest minds at Dubspot. Hailing from places as disparate as Austin, Pittsburgh, Albuquerque and Stevens Point, WI, the campers (three of whom had never visited NYC before) experienced a fair share of urban insanity during their time studying and creating heavy bass bangers.
A top-notch team of instructors developed a curriculum to immerse the guys in all aspects of the dark art of dubstep. Joe Nice, a Baltimore-based DJ, is credited as the genre's first ambassador in the U.S. via his club night Dub War. DJ Rupture (Jace Clayton) is world-renowned for his mashed up multicultural leftfield productions and live performances, and is also a respected music theorist and journalist. He heads up the DuttyArtz label Matt Shadetek, a producer of funky tropical dancehall reggae anthems. Dave Sharma is a percussionist and producer who reps the Sub Swara crew, a live electronic performance group that melds genres with a global sensibility.
With this qualified squad at the helm, the campers were thrown right into dubstep’s deepest trenches. Classes included History of Dubstep, Art of DJing, Music Production 101/201, Getting Started in the Biz and Art of Collaboration. They also got hands-on, one-on-one time with the instructors, who showed them the ropes. The event culminated in a group night out at Dub War, where everyone celebrated the genre on NYC’s most proper sound system at Love.
