Look at these, my child bearing hips

Changing opinions about an artist happens very infrequently for me. I've decided that my defining personality trait is that I'm a synthesizer -- in all aspects of my life, I seem to gather information and don't form opinions for a long, long time. But once I decide, that's usually it. So it is rare that a band can overcome my initial conception of them. But it has happened. Sometimes it's the b

What Would You Say If I Sang Out Of Tune?

Not being blessed with a singing voice, I have a soft place in my heart for artists who can't sing. There are many who sneer at bad singers. But to me, the song is more important, and there are many, many songs that are among my favorites that I probably never would have heard if the rules were still the same as they were in the early twentieth century, where only the best singers could get a reco

Album titles

As far as good album titles go, it's hard to top REM'sAutomatic For The PeopleNot only does it just have a good mouthfeel, it's also tied to their Athens roots.I'm also partial to Built To Spill'sKeep It Like a SecretHowever, usually my taste veers towards wordiness. Three of my favorites are from Modest Mouse:This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think AboutGood News for People Who L

Not to be morbid, but once last post on the death theme -- Joe Strummer's death a few years back hit me harder than any other celebrity death I can think of. Too young, and too good. (It was close to Christmas when I heard about it, and I happened to be visiting Vietnam about to visit Ho Chi Minh City, which only served to remind me of that song he wrote.)I had been loving his recent albums, and

I always find it fascinating to go to Amazon.com and read the negative reviews about great albums. For instance -- Nirvana's "Nevermind". While most reviewers there give it five stars, one in ten will give it only one (there's almost no in between). Here are some clips from the one-star reviews:"I am sorry but I just don't get it. My only take is that the late 80's got so bogged down and stale

Was Kind of Hard to Believe

Notes on the V Festival (New York Dolls/Phoenix/Jarvis Cocker/THE PIXIES):Sidney Myer Music Bowl: meh. All alcohol purchases were cordoned off to one tiny area on the side where you couldn't even see the stage. Huge area of prime real estate totally wasted, between the primo seats and where we were back with the common folks. Sound decent, nice city skyline view.I wasn't aware that The New Yo

As long as you don't try dragging my bay or dropping the bomb on my street

We saw the Pretenders over the weekend at nice venue. We were supposed to see Paul Kelly and The Church as well, but we FORGOT THAT WE HAD TICKETS to this show until we got a call from the organizer at around 4:30.I blame early onset senility. Anyway, they were really good. Chrissie was in fine voice, and looking damn good, too. At one point she played a song I didn't recognize, what I thou...
