WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Are You Looking For The Mother Lode?

Posted over 2 years ago
I just bought tickets to see the Pixies.I JUST BOUGHT TICKETS TO SEE THE PIXIES.Clearly I've entered some parallel universe where all my wishes come true, because everyone knows there's no way the Pixies would ever reunite.(Yes, I know they've been playing gigs for a while now, but they've always been Somewhere Else.)I got into them too late. Trompe Le Monde, their last album, was in fact my first. The other four were bought in quick succession, and I loved them all, but was always wistful about the missed opportunities to see them.So now, this. Having Phoenix - who I've already mogged about - open for them is just gravy. (Jarvis Cocker is also opening, which could be good too; I never followed Pulp that closely but I always felt like they were a band I could get into.)Frank's solo work is brill too (most of it). But the Pixies? Shit. I don't even care if it's for the money. The other day on another forum I told someone who said they didn't get the Pixies this: "The may not be your favorite band, but they're probably your favorite band's favorite band."

  1. lemontwist says Have fun dude. :) I didn't get into the Pixies until about two months ago. Lately I haven't been able to get enough of Doolittle. It's been my overplayed album of the week.

  2. charleslee says I saw them a few years ago, and they were phenomenal (though the opening band blew). Have fun. I'm seeing Damien Rice and Arcade Fire back to back in Paris. I guess everyone is having awsome luck w/ tickets.

  3. patradio says Let me know if you feel "it" when you see them. That indescribable feeling when you see a favorite band and are blown away by them. I saw the Pixies a couple years back, from the third row. They played most everything I wanted to hear and played it well. Joey was shit hot and doing all kinds of crazy things to his guitar during "Vamos", but I got this feeling that their hearts really weren't in it. Maybe because they don't move around a lot on stage or something, and I hear from other fans that it's the way the band has always played. So it was good, and I'm glad I finally got to see them. But no "it".

  4. schnitzi says I'm not expecting "it". I only ever get "it" at small venues, and this will be a big festival. I've heard they CAN put on an incredible show, but in the clips I've seen of them, even during their heyday, they never made a big impression on me as performers. Who knows, maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

  5. Oatmeal says I also got into them by getting a used cassette of Trompe le Monde, and quickly snatched the others. I have been listening to the original EP Come On Pilgrim a lot lately. Enjoy the show. The only problem with "it" is that usually depends on the nature of the band. There is not a lot of room for the unexpected improv with The Pixies usual twisted three minutes of rawkus fun. Maybe that is why Vamos made such an impression on patradio.
