The new Danger Mouse produced album from Beck, 'Modern Guilt' is floating around out there. After a couple of listens I am not blown away, but not hating it either. I mean there just isn't much to it. Ten short tracks. However, even average Beck is still usually more interesting than 95% of what you hear out there anyway...

I hate to say it, but ever since I heard Beck put his faith in L. Ron Hubbard and the mothership, I have found him increasingly less interesting with every effort. Maybe I expect to much of my rock stars, but Aliens? Thetans? Go watch Battlefield Earth and tell me why you would want to believe that shit?

I don't really pay attention to what my favorite musicians do in their free time...God knows I wouldn't want anyone judging me for how I spend my time!!!

Yeah, I know, I'm pretty forgiving with most stuff, but I just don't understand all that scientology crap.

Tryi living in LA for a few months...you can't walk down Hollywood Blvd without people trying to convert you...they are whacked!

You know I can understand people being drug addicts, or messed up on life - that's all stuff creative people seem prone to being "victims" of. But to become a Scientologist is a choice, and I guess it just seems so illogical, I guess it's hard for me to forgive someone for being so illogical in their "spirituality".

I'm far from blown away, as well. Still, like you said, B, it's still Beck, but I was hoping or more. It seems that Danger Mouse's production skills haven't been overly well-recieved lately...

NO...i wasn't really happy with what he did for another favorite band of mine, the Black Keys

exactly.... my feelings for that album were about the same as the feelings I'm forming for this album... (eh...)

I think that's a problem with superstar producers - they have a "sound" and when it ets spread around, it's just not unique. Why do you think Daniel Lanois only produces albums every couple years or so.
Beck always seems good for a really great single or two.

That seems to be the problem with the latest, flash in the pan sort of producers...but the real geniuses, like Rick Rubin, take what the artist does best and makes it better...Slayer,Johnny Cash,RHCP,the Beastie Boys, Jay Z...the more I listen to that last Black Keys album the more I start to despise all things Danger Mouse

I think I grew wary of him with DangerDoom "The Mouse and The Mask". I enjoy Dooms work, but it just felt like a weak cross promotional tool.
Eno seems to do what you speak of well - except on that co-produced U2 album with Lanois, where I never even heard what his contribution was on it.
My Trusted MOGs
I have proudly never listened to a U2 album..

Haven't heard it yet (song here is so and so), but if what I read here is true, and after all this time he made a mediocre album, the fact that he is Beck, that makes it even worse.

Not really worth your time Anna, I am sorry to say...it just doesn't leave any sort of lasting impression...good, bad. or otherwise...10 very short tracks...i expect more from a guy who blessed us with 'Beercan'
