On Death And Dying

Posted about 1 year ago

Did anyone else have to read that book by Elisabeth Kübler Ross in collge? Quite possibly the longest semester of my life...but I digress.

Death is such great topic for songs. Probably because it's one of the only things that EVERYONE in the universe has in common.

I just love a good dying song every now and then. And I am not goth at all, I swear. I don't have the fashion sense to be goth. Anyway, here are three of my favorites...actually onely one of them(the Natalie Merchant song) is about death..the other two just have dying references in the title, but I love the song.

Death Don't Have No Mercy - Traditional (I think) but I heard it from the Dead first.

See That My Grave is Kept Clean -Bob Dylan covering another classic

Waiting For Superman - Flaming Lips (well Coyne wrote it after his dad died)

Do You Realize? - Flaming Lips

The Show Must Go On - Queen  - This album was always poinant to me since it was released shortly before Freddy died, so when you listen to it, you realize, he knew it was over.

Eels - Electroshock Therapy Blues, whole album.  But specifically "Going To a Funeral"

Blackened - Metalica.  This song litterally scared the shit out of me in 6th grade.  Say what you will about the band now, but no metal album quite sounds like this.

That's the short list... But I could definitely go on...

thank God I didn't have to read that book.  I tend to enjoy songs about death as well...even that Randy Travis song about the 3 crosses by the highway ;)

Fortunately I never encounter that book.  yeah, guess this is a dying song though I hear it more as a pragmatic slam on religion.  As for the goth fashion tips I got a niece who might be willing to help you out with that, though don't think she really appreciated it last Christmas when I asked her why she was wearing her socks on her arms

The Dr Dog song is off the album before the new one, 'We All Belong'...they do sound A LOT like the Beatles and the Beach Boys, but in a really good way.

Contra....yep, that entire Eels album is totaly fixated on death, but I guess when your mother dies while recording, that happens.

And you should all be thankful that you didn't have to read that book...

I like the Iris Dement version of this a lot, too...I like the guy who comes in on the back-up vocals. Who he?

Love this Natalie Merchant song.  She's another who's voice I just couldn't stand, then read the lyrics...fantastic songwriting.  Love her and 10,000 M now.

One song about dying that stuck out (among others from the Cure) was "Where the Birds Always Sing"...it hit me at a certain moment when a good friends daughter passed away.  It brought on some gut wrenching feelings. It's a great song tho.

downhome - that's David Byrne from Talking Heads!  : )

I think I actually like Johnny Cash's version of that better...sends he sounds so close to death as he is singing it!

Could be true. I might be biased 'cause I witnessed Cave's version in person just a few days ago :)
