Morrissey+Vampires=Let the Right One In

Posted over 3 years ago

As Sam said, we went to the Rehoboth Beach Film Festival this weekend. And we only got to pick two movies because we're poor, but that's okay. We saw a movie, which I intended to do a post on awhile ago, called Let The Right One In. This was a novel by a Sweedish author, and made into a Sweedish language movie (the real title is Låt den rätte komma in). Apparently there is already plans for it to be made into an American version, directed by Matt Reeves, a writer director and producer for the old tv show Felicity....so we'll see how that turns out.

Anyways, it was really good and mostly a love a story. Here's the official synopsis: "Oskar is a 12-year-old-boy who is being bullied at school. He befriends a mysterious girl, Eli, who moves in next door with her father Håkan. In the course of the story the reader finds out all is not what it seems. Eli is really a boy and a vampire and his "father" supplies him with fresh blood by murdering young boys. As Oskar gradually begins to understand who Eli really is, the bond between them grows stronger. Eli teaches him to stand up to his bullies and Oskar grows increasingly fond of him."

What I wanted to comment on is that the title is actually taken from the Morrissey song "Let the Right One Slip In." Perfect. When I read about it in the New York Times, they said this about Morrissey, "a romantic fatalist who would surely appreciate this darkly perverse love story." And as the lyrics go...

Ah ... I will advise
Ah ... Until my mouth dries
Ah ... I will advise you to ...

Ah ... let the right one slip in
Slip in
Slip in

And when at last it does
I'd say you were within your rights to bite
The right one and say, "what kept you so long ?"

So they're aluding to the lore that a vampire is not able to enter someone's home unless invited in, which also happens to be maybe the most memorable scene in the movie. So go check it out!

Thanks for the heads up. Leeds has a film festival going on at the moment, and I've spent more money on tickets than I'd like to admit....
