Saturday Favorites - - The Mortician's Daughter

Posted almost 5 years ago
I often read descriptions of Freedy Johnston's songs that make comparisons to short stories, and while he does create characters and situations as a writer would, Freedy strips away so much from the story that I don't think the comparison is apt. Listeners are given the bare minimum and encouraged to draw their own conclusions, whether they be about Freedy's life or yours. For me, "The Mortician's Daughter" evokes a lot of emotions related to my childhood, despite the fact that I never knew a mortician or, as you might infer, a mortician's daughter. On the broken step is a cardboard box full of wilted flowersShe whispers in my burning earIt doesn't matter

Freedy is gonna be playing a bunch of times in austin during sxsw 2011.  He has a new side project with Jon Dee Graham and Susan Cowsill called The Hobart Brother and Lil' Sis Hobart.  Great stuff.
