WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

belated top 10 of 2006

this year was all over the map for me. i spent at least a month and a half listening to strictly rock trios. i rediscovered the jimi hendrix experience and cream, finally listened to jeff beck (beck, bogert and appice) and robin trower and even dusting off my stevie ray records. there was a good stretch where, thanks to jason and laura at bullmoose, i was exposed to groups like tomorrow, thomas and richard frost, the nazz and the yardbirds (who i have been meaning to listen to for years but never got to it for one rason or another). i had a real thing for white blues guitar players for a while too. there is something different about white players i think. i can't put my finger on it. i don't think it's better or worse just different. i checked out peter green and mike bloomfield and listened to jimmy page (outside of led zeppelin) . all very inspiring and got me interested in that sort of thing again, which was refreshing. oh oh oh... and gil made me buy that mississippi john hurt record... for songs that were recorded in 1928 in such a repetitive style like the blues these songs are damn catchy... so good... a lot of hip hop for me this year. common, sage francis, mr. lif. all very inspiring and actually helped me a little bit in breaking a real bad bout with writers block. it was my goal this year to get all of the beatles LP's and a finally managed that while watching the anthology twice (highly recommended). i rounded out the year listening to elvis costello religiously and it made me feel pretty good as he has been a big part of my life forever now...so while i felt like i was playing catch up most of the year i did listen to some new music. so here it is...rocky votolato - makersregina spektor - begin to hopetom waits - orphanslong winters - putting the days to bedthe replacements - do you know who i think i wascold war kids - robbers and cowardsmaritime - we, the vehicleshead automatica - popagandacartel - chromasean lennon - friendly fire this is my first time posting anything this long that isn't band related. so thank you for reading if you made it this far. send me your lists cos i feel like i may have missed out... let me know.xxoo ryan

  1. lisj27 says makers & putting the days to bed were def. two of the most underappreciated releases of 2006... you've got a good list...
