WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Apples and Oranges, Fujis and Galas, Part 1

Posted about 1 year ago
After two close-but-no-cigar attempts I finally received Three Days Grace's self-titled debut album as a lala trade in the mail today. As I was enjoying it (now some hours ago) I thought this might be the perfect time to forge some neural pathways to help me distinguish for once and for all between fave bands Three Days Grace and Seven Mary Three.Three Days Grace is a Toronto-based outfit formed in 1997 by three members of a previous incarnation Groundswell: Adam Gontier (vocals, guitar), Brad Walst (bass), and Neil Sanderson (drums). A second guitarist Barry Stock subsequently joined the band, being recorded for the first time on the band's 2006 sophomore outing One-X. Singles from 2003/s Three Days Grace included "I Hate Everyting About You," "Just Like You," "Home," and "Overrated." One-X has given us the #1 Modern Rock hit "Animal I Have Become" as well as "Pain" ("Pain without love / Pain I can't get enough / Pain I like it rough / Cause I'd rather feel pain than nothing at all") and the anti-suicide anthem ubiquitous on Top 40 radio "Never Too Late." And oh (how could I forget?) "Riot":If you feel so emptySo used up so let downIf you feel so angrySo ripped off so stepped onYou're not the only oneRefusing to back downYou're not the only oneSo get upLet's start a riot, a riotLet's start a riotLet's start a riot, a riotLet's start a riotAccording to Rhapsody Three Days Grace's pedigree runs Rock/Pop > Metal > Alt Metal, and Mike McGuirk further situates them as "[l]ouder and angrier than many of their peers, the band falls somewhere between the mechanical rage of Trapt and the sing-able hipness of Saliva."

  1. dermahrk says Not really a metal fan (and all of its seemingly endless variations and names), but this is not bad at all. It contains my minimal elements for enjoyment - a melody and singing as opposed to screaming. For the same reasons I enjoy a little Soundgarden. Nice!

  2. BelovedListener says You know, I've never really been a huge Three Days Grace fan, but I have no idea why. I'm pretty much into the rock/metal scene, and they seem like someone I should have gotten into a long time ago. This is a really great song, at least I like it, and I think it could (like dermahrk said) draw in some outsiders who aren't really into the whole metal and distortion scene. ^_^

  3. runobodyii says You know I was really surprised when those metal, alt metal genre tags started popping up for music I was listening to, and just yesterday I was surprised to hear MOGgers placing Def Leppard under that rubric. But I think at some point I, and maybe others, conflated metal with death metal (where you have loads of distortion and screaming and an overall menancing and misanthropic feel to it). Glad ya'll like. Here's the "Home" video (if it works, please excuse the ad)

  4. runobodyii says and "Pain" which is even more melodic.
