What is it with the annoyingly long and oh-so-witty band names these days? Well, despite my disdain for their name, I saw this band on Friday night at the Independent in SF. They opened up for Sound Team. I really enjoyed their set. I liked the way that the two vocalists sounded together and the way they switched off bass/rhythm guitar and lead vocals. These guys defintely have a certain way of composing to create extremely fun, hook-ridden songs that all hang together but don't sound too similar to one another. The lead guitarist kind of hung out in the background quietly grooving and playing some fairly intricate parts that meshed brilliantly with bass lines and the drummer's groove. In fact, the songs are all expertly crafted, and the band pulls them off really well live, without seeming to have to try too hard. They are still able to goof around and have fun onstage. Somehow it seemed oddly appropriate when one dude unapologetically donned ski goggles to block some of the glare from the lights. It was great to see this band at the Independent, as well, perfect size space and a good turnout.SSLYBY's new album is Broom:
