One of the best early 80s hard rock bands...

Posted almost 6 years ago
Any of my MOG peeps remember a band called Shooting Star? If any of you kids who like hard rock from the 70s and 80s don't know about Shooting Star, you should check 'em out!Take a listen to their debut album from 1980, "Shooting Star" with one of my favorite songs of the era, Last Chance, or their 1981 breakthrough "Hang On For Your Life" from which almost every single song was a nationwide radio hit. Best tracks from that are Breakout, Flesh And Blood, Are You On My Side, Hollywood, Hang On For Your Life. These guys never quite made it to international superstardom, so many people have forgotten about them or never even knew about them. Most people that I ask have never heard of them. This is a shame, since they really did record some great classic hard rock songs. They used to play the crap out of these tunes on Boston radio in the early '80s...I had them on vinyl, and I had to buy a second copy of "Hang On For Your Life" because I wore it out! Now both of these albums are on iTunes and Amazon. If you really want to rock, play "Hang On For Your Life" in your car and go for a night drive...YEAH! Even at these ridiculous gas prices, it's worth it!

Something like that almost got me killed, back in '92. Was on my way to visit friends in New Orleans, and, somewhere between Montgomery and Mobile (if i drove down that way, i could probably point out the exact spot, even fourteen years later) and i had Motorhead's 1918 on the stereo, cranked -- it was either Angel City or their Ramones tribute, R+A+M+O+N+E+S (That's supposed to have stars in, not plusses, but that does bad stuff in TEXTILE, so...). So i'm blasting down the road at ninety or better, 2AM, singing along... And a possum on the half shell walks out in front of me. (Louisiana joke: "Why did the chicken cross the road?" "To prove to the armadillo it can be done.") And i swerved. Next thing i know, the car's sideways, trying to tip over, then i'm going whoopde-do three times round down the middle of I-65 in the dark. Ended up crosswise to the road, with no idea which way was the right way to go - until i saw some headlights coming form one side and headed on down the road the other way. Didn't even wet myself. Lesson: Even if you're sober, sometimes it's a bad thing to get high on the music.
