"Rockstar" TV show - Dave Navarro losing all music cred?

Posted over 3 years ago
Former guitarist for Jane's Addiction and The Chili Peppers, Dave has been generally regarded as a kick-ass guitar player and respected as a rock musician. Then he married Carmen Electra and had a reality show on MTV similar to the Newlyweds. And now, similar to the Newlyweds, Dave and Carmen are splitting up. Yeah, I know - who cares? I just brought this up to make a point - at some level, this was all painfully predictable, no?Well, Dave Navarro has a new band called the Panic Channel, which has not released any music yet....I am hoping it rocks. But to get to the meat of the motivation for this somewhat rambling post, he is also the host of the show Rockstar, which is currently in its second season. The first season of Rockstar conducted a competition to select a new lead singer for INXS - you know, that band that had a lot of hits a really long time ago. This time, the band looking for a singer is a new band called Supernova, made up of Gilby Clarke (formerly with Guns N' Roses ) on guitar, Jason Newsted (ex-Metallica) on bass and Tommy Lee from Motley Crue on drums. Now none of these guys is known for writing great songs, or any songs, really. In fact, Tommy Lee's music career after Motley Crue has been a failure so far. I wonder where the songs for this new album are going to come from? Will they be any good? My expectations are low at best. Now, I'm not saying that I don't watch the show, of course - being a rock singer I find the show riveting. But the first season with INXS set the tone for this series - while it does provide an opportunity for unknown singers to join a band that has some industry backing, it is more a vehicle for washed-up has-been bands/musicians to attempt to get enough hype among the mindless TV watching masses to hopefully support one more album and tour. I imagine that the network must own a huge chunk of any proceeds, and whatever mobile carrier did a deal with the network gets to plug the shit out of themselves. Anyone associated with the show, outside of the handful of contestants that are truly talented performers, is basically admitting to being devoid of any real music cred or throwing away any that they may have had in desperation. This is way beyond selling out - this is whoring. So while Dave Navarro seems like a guy that would be fun to hang out with over a few beers, I have to wonder if this is a good career choice for him if he wants to continue being considered a musician...Thoughts?

  1. steve simon says as john bell sings, " i think out principles are reaching, an all time low" what garbage shit this kind of stuff is. but i can understand you watching it, it is sorta like trying to take your eyes off a train wreck, or some loud, drunk guy making a scene in a restaurant, it is very tough. my friend from florida actually was one of the last 10 people for the INXS thing, but i never watched it

  2. Jess Horrible says Supernova is a crap name for a band, sorry to be so blunt but it's true. I saw Dave Navarro on MTV Cribs a few years back (the only episode I ever got to watch actually!) and he was such a showoff, I kind of wrote him off then. I think he got trapped in his hubris... too bad! but there are tons of other great new musicians ready to take his place.

  3. phantom says I have been thinking this for a long time, This might not be the most popular statement but I HATE those shows. That might be coming from the fact that I am somewhat of what you would call a frustrated musician, But I think being even remotely connected to these type of shows destroys any Cred that they may of had at one time. I think a musician becomes a Musician after he pays his dues in the bars and club scene and builds on his or her wealth of experience. I kind of view these shows as a way of "Jumping the Q" so to speak (Butting into line) anyways I just had to get it off my chest.

  4. eshep says dave navarro is a tool. i used to like jane's addiction when they were happening. 'nothing's shocking' changed my life when it came out. but it wasn't long before his cheesy stage antics and his masturbatory guitar solos started to really get obnoxious and totally ruined any art that was going on with jane's addiction, for me anyway. when he joined the chili peppers and then later married carmen electra, i was convinced that he was a egotistical wanker and i pretty much wrote him off for good. now when he pops up on mtv cribs or on this god-awful rockstar show it's like a herpes breakout. i can't stand the guy. sorry. and i can't decide which is the scummier, he or tommy lee. they kind of represent everything that i dislike about los angeles.

  5. Underbocky says The last good thing Dave Navarro was on was Ritual de lo Habitual...all he's good for now is fashion tips and how to land hot starlets. I love this show, though! (see previous blurb) Also, Supernova is the name of a band from Costa Mesa...a sci-fi pop band which I thoroughly enjoyed until the original guitarist joined Man or Astroman? I wonder if there are any forthcoming law suits? Although, they'll probably be crushed by the burn-out's army of lawyers. First off, I like the show for the advice from the band which is hilarious...and I gotta admit, the drummer for the house band is sensational!!

  6. ROCKNROLLPIMP1 says ah hollywood whoredom overcomes yet another egotistic washed up spoon fed musician. all i can say is i rarely turn a damn tv on unless its to check out a documentary or watch one of my 245 music dvd's i kicked tv long ago....i do not understand celebrity, the need to feel loved by all nor understand how a serious "musician" would stoop to this level of blatant commercialism. these cats are way done with any creativity they once possessed.and i'm not gonna waste my time or money on anything they do or are connected with. i liked dave on the early janes stuff.non impressive since. tommy lee seems like a pr*&% gilbey....ehhhh jason...what an idiot to quit metallica all my thoughts on the matter

  7. MisterBo says The original "Supernova" had a song on the Clerks soundtrack called "Chewbacca" (Chewbacca, what a wookie!) pure dumb fun. I'm willing to bet that song is better than anything this Supernova will ever put out. On Dave Navarro, great guitar player, but I always felt there was something shifty about him, pretty much anything he's done after Jane's is crap. (Don't get me started on "One Hot Minute" that didn't happen, ok? The Peppers released Blood Sugar and then took a looooooooooooong break and released Californication, m'kay?) Anyone else think that Jason Newsted will bail after the show? Once he's not in the public eye wearing Voivod T-Shirts? I really hope so, he's the only guy in there I kinda like.

  8. rock or death says yeah, Jason Newsted seems like a good guy, very sincere. Maybe a bit naive? Should be interesting to see what happens...

  9. HalfManHalfMog says This show is okay.... I have in fact fallen in love with Storm Large.... but yeah.. none of these guys has ever written a hit song. But in the music industry they way it is today that doesn't matter. Viacom will spend a good chunk of money promoting their cd and the tour they will have. They'll get their video on MTV and FUSE/MuchMusic. They'll sell between 250,000-550,000 records and that'll be that. I don't think any of these guys will make a second record as Supernova unless the first one goes platinum. Jason does seem like a good guy, but he seems to just be floating around from band to band ever since he quit Metallica.

  10. fairportfan says In the lyric for "Good Music", Joan Jett sings:"...ev'ryone gettin' right in tow -- changin' songs to beon the radio..." We just gotta hang on, wait out the cycle -- there'll be more good music and more bands you can trust... Which, by the by -- Cowboy Mouth
