Carry On Wayward Son - thanks, Kansas!

Posted about 6 years ago
I first heard this most killer of tunes in the summer of 1977 when I was eight years old and a member of bunk 4 at Camp Youg Judea in Western Mass. My counselor, Steve, would rock out to this song constantly, playing it at top volume on his box that he used to perch on the rafters of our bunk. I was completely hooked at first listen and came to like the song even more than Steve, begging him to play it every chance I got. Which he pretty much did.It’s got it all – epic lyrics, soaring vocals and harmonies from Steve Walsh, kick-ass guitar riffs and syncopation between the rhythm and lead guitars in the instrumental section, not to mention the ultimately tasty guitar solos by Kerry Livgren.From the album Leftoverture. Never reached higher than 11 on the Billboard charts, but this song will forever be in my top 5 all-time favorite songs to rock out to. check out the "lyrics":javascript:popupWindow('http://www.songfacts.com/lyrics.php?findsong=2452');buy the "album":javascript:popupWindow('http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005JA2B/ref=m_art_bow_2/104-4344763-7965514?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=5174');

  2. rock or death says Cool - that summer in camp, my counselor didn't make me lift weights, but he did introduce me to the art of chewing tobacco. Redman...what a rush.

  4. mad4music says Kansas was just hitting their stride when I became old enough to start going to concerts (about 1977). I saw all the monsters of arena rock that year (all at Cobo Arena in Detroit): Kansas Styx REO Speedwagon Journey Rush Foreigner ...the list goes on. Oh, what a killer concert t-shirt collection I amassed!
