Still "Smokin" after all these years

Posted over 2 years ago
I have been wanting to post about Boston for a long time now. Ilistened to their second album yesterday, Don't Look Back, for the first time in a long time. It still gives me the goosebumps when I hear that section towards the end of "Don't Look Back" when everything cuts out except for that amazingly overdriven and sparklingly chorused electric guitar playing the main chord progression...yes. So then I played their first album, Boston, all the way through and I just still love listening to this band so much. Their music is so original sounding and it just simply kicks ass! Their album art is awesome! Plus, they took some great photos back in the '70s!I mean, come on - that is a cool jet!Oops...I almost forgot to write about the song I tagged the post for! Smokin' is a great song to listen to as an intro to Boston's sound. It showcases their incredible vocals, kick-ass songwriting that is bluesy riff-based rock with some sort of extra major key melodic magic - never has a band gotten so much mileage out of resolving with sus-4 to major chord! There is a lot of great organ work and tastey drumming. And such brilliant production of course...what a powerful package of musical goodness. Favorite song of all time is Foreplay/Longtime. Must listen, peoples!

  9. phantomtv says You know I love a band that sounds as good as they on their album and if the Purple Mini Mike is not clouding things too much they were a great live concert.

  11. jonnyalmagest says Boston is my favorite band that my parents listened to. Or at least the one I have listened to the most through the years of me making my own musical discoveries. And yeah, I've got a reoccuring dream where I finally get to play "Foreplay/Longtime" in front of an audience. It'd be the greatest live cover, I think.

  13. HarrySue says oh yeah... saw them thru a smokey haze at the Austin Auditorium when I as about 16. They must have been promoting the second album. They definitely earmed their spot in the soundtrack of my teenage years.

  14. rock or death says yeah - I also can't believe I forgot to mention those guitar harmonies!!!!!! Boston's guitar harmonies are the most goosebump-producing of any of the guitar harmony bands. Scorpions come in second for me, like on songs like There's No One Like You...but Boston really pushed thos guitar harmonies, I am not sure if there is a Boston song that does not have any guitar harmonies, actually...I need to do another post about that...

  15. Ross Freedman says My sister and I used to listen to albums in her bedroom (she was the one with the stereo) and I credit her with getting me into artists like Fleetwood Mac, Boston, Elvis Costello, Neil Young, Jackson Browne, The Clash and Squeeze (among many others). Boston is one of those bands that seems to be underrated or gets an eye-roll among "rockists" because their production was so squeaky clean -- not unlike Steely Dan, really -- and another eye-roll from "metalists" because their songs were too "pretty." Too bad. It's just great, great music. Thanks for the reminder, R-o-D.
