Soul-Full Saturdays

Posted over 3 years ago
So I'm covering Saturday's Soul-Full festival in West Palm Beach. The lineup is pretty impressive: Al Green, Lauryn Hill, The Roots, India.Arie and others.I've never seen any of them so I'm psyched about this one....and about finally seeing Lauryn Hill. Her Unplugged album's been in heavy rotation on my iPod. I was in Mexico when Miseducation came out and I missed the subsequent tour. I do remember, however, hootin' and hollerin' (I've just always wanted to use that phrase) in my living room when she walked away with an armful of Grammys that year. I paid $295 pesos (roughly $29.50) for that album because it was an import. In fact, I think I may have even budgeted around it that week. It's weird cuz I didn't listen to much hip-hop during those years. It was all salsa, merengue and Latin alternative music. Hence, I remember exactly where I was when I bought the Miseducation and The Roots' Things Fall Apart -- the only new hip-hop albums I'd listened to in almost three years. I bought Miseducation at Mixup, a chain of records store in Mexico. I had it unwrapped and in my discman (haven't used that word in years) before I even left the store. And I bought The Roots record at a Tower Records I used to go to just to buy Vibe, Spin and Rolling Stone. God, I even remember what section in the store it was in. When it comes to bringing back a memory, music rivals my sense of smell.
