WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Give me love, give me love...

Posted about 3 years ago
So, this girl I started seeing recently and I are sitting around listening to records. She asks me if I have the Van Morrison album with "Sweet Thing" on it. So I throw on "Astral Weeks," and she says how much she loves the song and how excited she is to finally hear it on vinyl and that she couldn't find it. (It IS a hard record to find, at least in the Rust Belt.) So anyway, I give her my extra copy that I had laying around and never got around to selling on eBay. Not a scratch on that bad boy; it looks like it's never been played. Sigh.I don't think she understands the magnitude of that gesture, how it shows her just how into her I am. It may not have been a ring, but it's pretty damn close. :)

  2. Anonymous says If I were you, and I were going on MOG telling one and all I feel I deserve a greater reward for being good to this woman than knowing I was being good to her, I might do well to make plans for what to do after she dumps me, which, with any justice, should happen real soon.

Um, Fedge, I wasn't being serious. And if I were you, and I were going on MOG calling someone an ass, I might reserve judgment unless I knew the situation. Or the people involved. Or the fact that I'm almost always joking about such stuff. But hey, enjoy being god's gift to romance, Dr. Ruth.

  5. Anonymous says Frankly, not only am I up for getting flayed by whatever barbs I _deserve_ to have flung my way over this, but I actually feel so low, for unrelated reasons, that I was wondering if you would not mind beating me up for... oh, I don't know? My stupid alias. My lame icon. My slack proofreading today (I've been busy). The fact that you've never been remotely mean to me, but for some reason I got a bug up my ass over this post (no, wait, I deserve punishment for that one), ... I'm open to suggestions. ... I'm sorry.

  6. rhymeswithrawk says It's OK, Fedge. If I were really serious about it, then I would have deserved it. And you had no way of knowing, since you don't know me or my postings, that I'm usually sarcastic and goofing around.

  7. Lester Jonze says Dude. If I were lucky enough to own an original press of this truly classic LP, (you have an extra copy?!?) There would be no giving away, or selling for that matter. Man, I don't know about this.

  8. rhymeswithrawk says Haha, that was my point, lester. I'm really into this girl by giving her this, and I don't think she realizes how much so. I wasn't looking for anything in return. As I was trying to tell Fedge, it's just a record, but it's a rare one. And a good one. And by giving it to her five days after I met her, it's a small sign of my crush that she may not realize.

  10. Peggah says Some boy gave me a record, The Smiths "Big Mouth Strikes Again" single. Except he made the point of letting me know how important it was that he was giving me a record. Hopefully she interpreted the gift as the love letter that it is :)

  11. Lester Jonze says Every time I ever tried to give a girl some music, it never really had the intended effect, maybe I just never gave music to the right girl. Lots of wasted time, ha!

  12. Peggah says I think a mix cd is the way to go. A boy once made a playlist on itunes of all the songs that had love in them, and that was good enough for me, haha.

  13. Anonymous says Hi. Me again. I got some sleep and had some orange juice, so this should go better than previous comments. An interesting topic opens here: music offered as a gesture of love, or at least interest. I once gave a girl named Pauline, who I just barely knew - we'd made out at a drive-in, and that's about it - a mix tape that charmed her on one hand (I included Camper Van Beethoven's heavenly "All Her Favorite Fruit"), and ultimately appalled her on the other (does the lyric "Hey Paulie Paulie Paul, let's have a ball... Gigantic!..." ring a bell with anyone?).

  14. Anonymous says I used to make mix tapes for all my sweeties (in fact I think I've made one for almost each sweetie I've ever had), but one of the best was giving J. a whole album of goodies and having him complain endlessly about two songs, Fields of the Nephilim's "Celebrate" and The Doors' "Riders on the Storm," both of which he made endless fun of because of how they just droned on and on. So when I went on a huge trip he made ME a tape with all sorts of awesome stuff on it, and some romantic stuff too, but he also got his annoyingly-long-song revenge by including "What's Become of the Baby" by the Grateful Dead. I didn't know whether to hug him (for the mostly nice mix) or sock him (for the terrible song). I think we called it even after that.

  15. Lester Jonze says I really gave up on making mixes for crushes, girlfriends, whatever, I never have been with anyone who views music in the same light as me, so now I just make mixes for me. I got skeeyelllz too, yo.

  16. Peggah says I've been compiling a list of songs to give this boy I am majorly crushing on. I don't think he'll think twice about it, or even listen to it. But I know that I can imagine him loving it.
