WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Oh, Canadia...

Posted over 3 years ago
I see there are a slew of Canadians on this here Mog, and I live in Detroit, about 5 minutes from Windsor, Ontario. So, it's only fitting that I open the e-floor for discussion of the greatest band(s) or singer(s) from our northern neighbor. I mean, it's a huuuuuuuuuuuge country, right? So there has gotta be a huuuuuuuuuuuuge number of sweet little rock 'n' rollers from it, right? I'm not a huge fan of Our Lady Peace or Alanis. So who am I missing out on? Who do I need to be listening to?Upon combing my Wall of Sound, I found CDs and records from only four Canadian artists that I genuinely, truly appreciate :1) Leonard Cohen2) Sloan3) Wolf Parade4) Arcade FireSo help me, O Canadians. Help me help your musicians.

  1. missjunk says Some nice mogging Canadian just turned me onto "Spirit of the West" . They sound sort of Irish pub rockers like a northern shores Flogging Molly...

  3. Oedipa Maas says Broken Social Scene and Sunset Rubdown are *wonderful*. Also... Malajube Swan Lake The New Pornographers Stars Feist Destroyer ...Choose New Zealand next. I might be a bit more helpful in that scheme of things...

  5. rhymeswithrawk says I didn't realize Destroyer was a Canadian. Nor did I realize Final Fantasy was, too. As for BSS, they're a tad too U2-y for me. At least that light blue-colored album was. And I've heard Stars and plan on picking it up when I find it used. It's $15 new in metro Detroit shoppes. I liked what I heard, but I didn't like it THAT much. :)
    Permalink posted 11/26/2006
  6. Oedipa Maas says Wow. U2? Never heard that before. Try the red BSS album, the eponymous one. Bono et.al. just played here - and were on all news channels. Sigh. I was a definite abstainer. ...And I suppose Whassisface Collett _does_ sound a little Bono-esque at times. Oh. Dear. P.S. Ditto on the feelings towards Stars. Bought Torquil Campbell's side project 'Memphis' for a curious fiver... And shouldn't have. A tad... indulgent... or summat. Yurr. P.P.S. Well... if you like Wolf Parade, then Spencer Krug's Sunset Rubdown should be a shoe-in. But you prolly already knew this... :)

  7. SWozniak says Detroit, Detroit...or a suburb? I used to live in Troy. Detroit is the shit. It and Seattle are my two favorite American cities.
    Permalink posted 11/26/2006
  8. rhymeswithrawk says I live in Detroit. In New Center, about two blocks from the Fisher Building. One of my biggest pet peeves: People who say they live in Detroit when they live in the suburbs. I lived in Seattle for a year (and Tacoma for a year, too), and it was all right. Gorgeous place to live, lots going on. But I found it rather too pretentious for my taste.
    Permalink posted 11/26/2006
  9. SWozniak says I've always lived outside those cities (Tacoma, Seattle, and Detroit), but I only say I lived in Detroit if I'm nowhere near it. Nobody knows the 'burbs.

PS: I'm no longer in the City Limits, but I like to think I still am just the same :)

  13. Peggah says On Friday at Magic Stick I saw Jason Collett and Sam Roberts Band, and they're both Canadian. And once, I drove to Guelph? I think, to see Pilate, now called Pilot Speed. Also, I used to love Joydrop, hahaha. Oh man, 89x introduced to me to so many Canadian bands. The Lovely Feathers played at the Lager House on Saturday, and I missed them unfortunately. Also, Tegan and Sara. I like their songs, but not their voices. A bigger pet peeve of mine is when kiddies in the suburbs say they're from Detroit when they've NEVER been. It really surprises me how terrified people are of Detroit.

    Permalink posted 11/27/2006
  19. kristiana says I would like to think that there is something uniquely Canadian about Neil, maybe he would too. But he's been an ex-pat for so long.... What does any of it even mean anyway? Yet another barrier we put between ourselves - categorize ourselves to the point where we don't know who the hell we really are, just have these stupid tags. Well anyways. Don't forget "Helpless": There is a town in north Ontario, With dream comfort memory to spare, And in my mind I still need a place to go, All my changes were there. I know Neil, I know.

  20. dbboucher says Oh, Canadia? You only need one vowel for our country name... You seem to like Indie Rock. Well you're in luck, because the Canadian Indie Rock scene is just booming right now. It's not my specialty, I'm still living in the 90s alternative rock scene myself. As for the Indie Rock bands, I like Metric, Wolf Parade, Hot Hot Heat, The Dears, Feist, Broken Social Scene, New Pornographers to name a few. If you like the 90s alternative rock, I have a bunch more, but you already indicated you didn't like Our Lady Peace so that's not a good start.

  30. 1234chainsaw says I can't get into BSS or Wolf Parade, but do check out Metric and The Stills. But only their first records. The sophomore efforts by both are disappointing.

Constantine, Destroyers, and the New Pornos, sure. Ditto for Neil and the Cowboy Junkies. When did Bright Eyes become Canadian? Conor Oberst is a Nebraska boy. I also don't think TV On The Radio are Canadian. Another band that shouldn't be let out of Canada are the Tea Party. Too bad for this thread that Neko Case isn't Canadian. There were some good poppy punk bands in the late '70s and early '80s (I like the Pointed Sticks and the Diodes in particular), but it sounds like that might not be so much your thing. Finally, the Deadly Snakes and The Organ.

    Permalink posted 11/27/2006
  32. rhymeswithrawk says I have Metric's "Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?" and really like several of the tracks off that. And I have Destroyer's "Rubies," "This Night" and "Your Blues." I have the first two New Pornos, but haven't bought "Cinema" yet. I have all the Neil Young from Buffalo Springfield to about 1980. And I have all of the Deadly Snakes records - they're even one of my "bands you should've heard of" on Mog. I can't believe I forgot they were Toronto boys. TV on the Radio are from New York. Another band not to let out of Canada: The Tragically Hip. Moral of the story: I like more from Canada than just four bands and Labatt.

  40. kristiana says Wow, that brought back memories, ehoo - I mean ooeh - like, every other all-ages show when I was a teenager growing up in NB. You managed to find one of the few ET songs I actually liked back in the day. I dunno, I always found them unoriginal - from their name, to so obviously showing their influences( Sonic Youth, duh, Dinosaur Jr., My Bloody Valentine), to the shoegazing and turning of backs to the audience which always got on my nerves. But who am I to talk? It's not that they were that bad - it's just they got sooooo much attention, and I never really understood why, especially when there were so many other interesting things going on in the local scenes. Oh well. Julie Doiron is still doing the solo thing, and of course there is Elevator (formerly known as Elevator Through, formerly known as Elevator To Hell, lol).

  48. rhymeswithrawk says The Weakerthans ARE a great band. Maybe nobody has mentioned them because nobody realized they were Canadian. "My city is still breathing, but barely it's true/through cities gone missing like teeth." That line always reminds me of Detroit, not Canadia. :)

Members of Frog Eyes, Destroyer, Wolf Parade) bq. - Atlas Strategic (defunct, proto-Wolf Parade) bq. - Blue Pine (defunct, proto-Frog Eyes) For folks who like Sigur Ros and atmospheric stuff like that: bq. - A Northern Chorus bq. - The Faunts (more shoegazey) For folks who like beautiful, moodie indie pop: bq. - "Chet":http://myspace.com/chet bq. - "Elephant Island":http://elephantisland.net bq. - Away Ri'o! bq. - Rufus Wainwright bq. - Chad Van Gaalen bq. - Himalayan Bear In a more country/folky/songwriter style: bq. - Great Aunt Ida bq. - Roger Dean Young and The Tin Cup bq. - Martha Wainwright bq. - The Sadies bq. - The Unintended (The Sadies plus Greg Keelor of Blue Rodeo) Power-pop, dancey indie type stuff: bq. - Immaculate Machine bq. - "Young & Sexy":http://www.youngandsexy.org bq. - "The Paper Cranes":http://thepapercranes.com bq. - Unicorns / Islands bq. - Run Chico Run (I saw them open for Man Man in October, and it really made sense. They are surprisingly dark despite being upbeat and fun.) A great website for this kind of thing is "New Music Canada":http://newmusiccanada.com. Practically everybody keeps a profile on there, and lists the other NMC bands they like. They also have a frequent podcast (CBC Radio 3 podcast) of new music.
