Joanna Newsom & Smog, 13 Feb San Francisco Bathhouse, Wellington NZ

Artist:
If you have any respect for aural pleasure, you must must MUST check out Joanna Newsom, and also Smog. I had the pleasure of being given a ticket to their sold out show on Sunday as a birthday present, as my initial introduction to these two amazing performers. Never have I been quite so enraptured and enthralled, enough to put up with the discomfort of standing for hours without moving.
Her talent equalled by her magnificent beauty, Joanna Newsom plays the harp in a way which makes you question why anyone ever touches a different instrument. Her voice, so seemingly soft and innocent, can cry out and wrench your gut. Time seems to pass immeasurably, as her songs draw out a story you have to follow.
Smog, or Bill Callahan, has such a rich tone that I don't believe the recordings I have heard to date do any justice to his live presence. Skilled acoustic guitar picking provides a beautiful supplement to the wonder of his voice. I am simply in awe.
Rumours are that the two are dating, which would make perfect sense, as they are both stunning artists who seem in touch with the world in a way which has long been forgotten. They play the kind of music that demands your attention whilst in solitude, able to drift along with it. Despite their awe inspiring presence, both portray a very human presence on stage, with the right amount of banter to reassure that they are not crazy robot musicians of wonder. A perfect, perfect night.
