4 lines of hurt and hope

I won't bother to try and convince any doubters of something you should all know already: one of the greatest albums of all time!But i wanted to encourage you to listen again anyway, and to pay particular attention to this typically amazing Randy Newman song. Here are the lyrics to the chorus:Just one smile, the pain's forgivenJust one kiss, now the hurt's all goneJust one smile to make my life worth livingA little dream to build my world uponWhen I finally heard this version by Dusty (having previously been mostly familiar with the Blood, Sweat and Tears one) I was just floored by the sadness inherent in the singer's resignation. Dusty seems totally able to feel the completely submissive almost masochistic sentiment of these words Newman has written. He's a fascinating writer, isn't he?. Writes catchy, sugary songs for blockbuster movies but also a ton of amazing and totally raw songs where the singer's self-doubt, misanthropy and/or perversion makes the listener uncomfortable and yet sympathetic.
