I was a Letterman fan early on, always making sure to catch his appearances on the Tonight Show, arranging my schedule so I could see his daytime show and staying up late to see his original nighttime show on NBC. His first few years at CBS were a treat, but as the run wore on, he seemed to tailor his jokes more to the tourists in the live audience than those of us in TV land.
So I was really surprised at the sharpness of Letterman's barbs last night in reacting to John McCain's cancellation. It wasn't the pique of a scorned television host, it was the disappointment of a friend and admirer:
The subtext of Letterman's rants are more broad-based and highlight McCain's Rovian campaign and questionable VP pick. I particularly like his suggestion that if McCain is really needed in Washington, he should take the cocoon off Sarah Palin and have her campaign for the Republican ticket. Put the backup quarterback on the field; sure she hasn't been taking snaps with the A-squad, but she's ready, right? Isn't that what we were told from the start - she's ready to step in.
Perhaps this clip, in which Palin reads seemingly random passages from her talking points memo, explains why McCain needs to temporarily shut down his campaign:
Frightening.

I've been trying to hold my politics in check recently and treat this more like the music blog it is, but the thing that don't smell right to me is the sudden need for a massive bail-out. Seem to me the last time this administration told us all we had to do something dramatic NOW or there would be "mushroom clouds" in our future it was just a pile of shit to scare us into supporting a stupid plan. Fuck they are talking $2,333.33 per person, (and I've heard it said that's a conservative estimate of the cost of Bush's proposal) - almost ten grand’s worth of your money for a family of four, to support the speculative investor's class. Trying to say the economy will collapse without it - sounds a lot like Saddam has WMD's to me. Bush/Cheney pulling a lame duck grand slam for their rich friends as the masters of fear they are. God I hope they don’t get away with it.
