In, then Out of and Beyond Africa

Posted about 5 years ago
One of the more compelling cultural groupings I've come across. Two celtic musicians, Martin Craddick and Su Hart somehow ended up in the west Africa region known as Baka, the region known as home of the African Pygmies (a term the Baka folk consider derogatory). They fell in love with the rhythms and vocalings of the Baka people and incorporated them into their Celtic music. Now, nothing against the likes of Peter Gabriel, Bill Nelson and Japan, whose incorporations of non-Euro musics got this WASP interested in the music of Africa and Asia in the first place, Baka Beyond seems a bit more authentic of a marriage between two different musical worlds with about half of the musicians in Baka Beyond being from Cameroon or Senegal or a surrounding area in Africa.I could easily get on a soapbox and start preaching about how music shows us that our similarities are far stronger than our differences, but that would be preachy.

  1. Wozniak says I love Baka Beyond. They did a song for the Big Noise Oxfam CD around 2003 and I fell in love. The song itself wasn't that great, but enough to get me interested. Cool post.

  2. Bakachat says here's a video of martin Cradick (of Baka Beyond) recording the Baka musicians who inspired Baka Beyond playing their own songs (You can read more about them at "www.baka.co.uk":http://www.baka.co.uk/baka/ )
