This is how Les Savy Fav chose to greet us downstairs at the Middle East last Saturday night. Singer Tim Harrington stared quietly at us through his DIY mask and began an almost imperceptible whistle into the microphone. Then he would turn in on the crowd for us to howl a responding whistle. Soon has howling had reached sufficient crescendo, Seth Jabour jangled out guitar notes to powerup the rest of the band into What Would Wolves Do? from their latest releas... MORE
I believe I stumbled on this group while fiddling with the "Genius" feature of iTunes. I have to admit; when the news first broke that iTunes would include this kind of feature, I balked at upgrading. That being said, my suggestions thus far have been pretty good. Kudos Apple. Anyways, back to the group. Their name immediately made me laugh and relive horrifying images that were only the previews for Snakes on a Plane. Before I turn off muting, a quick search on Wikipedia... MORE
Henry "Pucho" Brown grew up in Harlem and is generally associated with Latin Jazz stars like Willie Bobo, Cal Tjader, and Mongo Santamaria. He is not latino, but the timbale man had no trouble fitting into the Harlem music scene that broke out with boogaloo in the 60's and incorporated lots o' soul and funk as the 70's dawned..The Super Freak record from '72 is heavily steeped in the funk as evidenced by this Curtis Mayfield triple bill, done up in fine medley style..... Happy Sunday you glorious moggers you. It's clear blue skies and 75 here in NYC. Whoa! So last week I posted my version of Beethoven's "Fur De Lis" and this week it's The Small Faces "All or Nothing." After watching the live video of the original below, I think it was quite a dubious move on my part! Steve Marriott is a rock legend, but the song has just always moved me and I couldn't resist doing it. Producer Mike 'Slo-Mo' Brenner's steel magic is all over my vers... MORE
I don't get this. Isn't John Mayall supposed to be a lover of the blues? Isn't that why he called his combo with Eric Clapton The Bluesbreakers? If that's the case, why did he steal not only the melody but the guitar lines as well from a 1950s song, Forty-Four, written by Howlin' Wolf (aka Chester Burnett)? At least that's what the songwriting credits in my Wolf Box say. Listen to the Wolf's version, then listen to "My Little Girl" from the Bluesbreakers LP in Comments... MORE
I was planning on posting a nice, happy, upbeat cover today, but I woke up to the news that our Barack Obama sign has been taken from our front yard. AGAIN. In fact, there are no Obama signs left in my entire neighborhood.
And I'm pretty angry. Because, you know, stealing our property is really going to change my vote. People are such morons sometimes.
So now, it's "Knives Out".
"I don't know a soul who's not been battered, I don't have a friend that feels at ease. I don't know a dream that's not been shattered & driven to it's knees Ah, but its alright, its alright, 'cause we've lived so well so long." Paul Simon really touched a nerve with this song. But Elvis Costello & Allen Toussaint bring it to the mountaintop, Elvis' gritty angst-filled vocal perfectly captures the beaten down spirit of the lyric while Mr Toussaint's piano... MORE
Here the legendary Jamaican tenor sax man returns to his jazz roots (he was as a teenager a member of the Sonny Bradshaw Seven, before forming the Rass Brass reggae horn section in 1977). On this tune, recorded in late 1996, piano is by John Williams, and there are two drummers - Idris Muhammad in the right hand speaker and Sly Dunbar in the left. The tune itself was recorded by the Mighty Diamonds in 1976 - this cut opens with a brief quote from Joe Zawinul's "Mercy Merc... MORE
Joan Osborne's version of The Undisputed Truth's great tune. Some exquisite guitar work here, and keyboards too.
I took this pic myself! It was dark in there!
Altho I am not as active a live music goer as some Moggers (Indiepixie, Anna, Bloggerbabe, Mike the Knife , Jonh Ingham, I'm looking at you!), last night I took my Spinster-self out (here, alone!) to see the terrific Jeremy Wallace Trio (I am reclaiming the word Spinster as a cool thing, by the way!)
I was not disappointed (nor involved in a bar brawl). They played a tight little set of bluesy, rootsy rock with a bit of an e... MORE
Not perhaps the most representative cut of his to pick, this Gene Chandler cover was recorded for Duke Reid in the mid-sixties, using a fairly straight r'n'b backing. This is taken from a white label Jamaican "pre", with no label info, although the tune is now fairly easily obtainable on compilations
Lizzie Green Eyes recently swooned over Justin Currie's first solo CD. Justin (on the left in the pic) was the lead vocalist and co-songwriter in Del Amitri for many years. But you may not know that, between the end of Del Amitri (after record company mergers and artist roster dumping) and Justin's solo career came a quirky little side project called The Uncle Devil Show, where they took on the look of beatniks. Being a fan, I snapped it right up, but it proved less th... MORE
