I need a little love for the ladies, who so often have delivered unique and landmark hip-hop recordings, but even more often are overshadowed are just plainly left out of the current state of hip-hop unless they are doing some sexy schtick. I will start it out with under-appeciated Bahamadia. This is off an EP I picked up along the way. It features a track produced by Dilla/Slum Village to compliment Bahamadia's mellow and unique voice.
Ringo Starr's grand daughter will play a handful of gigs around the UK. The London-based group dubbed Belakis call themselves "psychadelic, alternative rock" and name everyone from the Verve to Spiritualized to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas as their influences. I'd like to meet the person who reads this and says "Awesome! I love Ringo Starr so now I'm going to pay to see his grand daughter play!" Check them out on myspace. Rather dull if you ask me.

The indie-rockers from California are back and they're ready to knock your socks off. The tour announcement comes in conjunction with the release of their new album, Loyalty to Loyalty, the long-awaited follow-up to 2006's debut Robbers and Cowards. The new album is set to hit shelves September 22. Never heard them? Be sure to check them out as they are not an act to be missed. More tour dates to be announced. I was a fan of their first album so I was stoked to catch th... MORE
While Metallica's Death Magnetic, the band's ninth studio album, idles quietly in oblivion until its unknown September release date, the metal band have gone on to tease us with its tracklist. The Rick Rubin-produced 10-track record is the first time the band have worked on an entire studio album with current bassist Robert Trujillo. Among Death Magnetic's cryptic titles is the third version of "The Unforgiven." The original (and best) of course appeared on 1991's Bl... MORE
I have been scarce lately, so busy wrapping up my internship and learning about racism and community organizing on the weekends (more to come on that). Plus the littlest addition to my family is due in the next couple of weeks, but I have missed out on a lot here at mog it seems. (Wish I would have gotten my shot together for assassins). Last month I made a Mixwit late night madness playlist, so here is my first Muxtape, in the same general theme of interesting left-field... MORE
This morning I was listening to the Eddie & Jobo radio show. They're two DJs that have been on the air in Chicagoland since I was born. Talking about the new number one album in America, one of the guys, I'm not sure which, made a joke in reference to my peeps (see my last name) and Nas, whose self-titled sold 187,000 copies to land on top of teh char thtis week. He beat last week's number one and fellow rapper, Lil Wayne, whose Tha Carter III sold 105,000 copies droppi... MORE
Indeed, I nearly found myself lying dead at the feet of one Rhett Miller last night after he autographed my copy of Old 97's "Fight Songs" in the following manner: To Jennifer (heart) Rhett (in bottom right hand corner) CUTE ----> (that's an arrow pointing toward my name). Oh, yeah, Rhett Miller thinks I'm cute. And I think he has the dreamiest eyes. So, we're even. This happened at a meet-n-greet at an in-store performance prior to the actual concert, which is actually r... MORE
One hopes that Loes van Schaijk doesn't have to experience the brutality of the Stalkerazzi as Britney Spears does. Nevertheless, here's a song from parent to child about leaving all the madness behind.
Loes van Schaijk counts up what a modern lover needs these days to stay in love. This one's got it bad...
This is one of three new/new-to-me music CDs from CD Baby. Starting off with the most recent (2008), here's a signature instrumental from the Dutch/Slovak Bluegrass group. Waterflow is: Loes van Schaijk, vocals; Lubos Jurkovic, guitar and vocals; Michal Barok, mandolin; Richard Cifersky, banjo; Peter Szabados, dobro and vocals; Roman Sykora, double bass and vocals. Have a tall glass of Waterflow!
I can't confirm that July is even the name of this song, much less whether or not "July" actually appears in the lyrics, but youtube tells me it is July, so that will have to do. I know nearly nothing of the Bloodthirsty Butchers, and learned very little via google, but this song is pretty great.
If you're in New York City, and you don't mind waiting on long, long lines, and you're ok with sitting outside in the park on a hot summer night, you can see "Hair" for free in Central Park. I wrote about "Hair" in a prior post, and it's not like I want to make any extravagant claims for its artistic value, but as a period piece, it'll be probably be kind of a hoot to see hippies cavorting on stage at the Delacorte Theatre and reenacting ancient tribal rites. Wha... MORE
