Rapture does taste sweet

A chance diversion into a coffee shop in Budapest's fifth district bought me back into contact with this sumptuous club anthem (and #2 hit in the UK) from 2002. It has danced back and forth across my brain for the last fortnight or so, and once you listen to it, it'll probably do the same thing to you.

The Postal Service may have coined "poptronica" with that one disc. Lord knows, Gibbard and Tamborello's synth-pop extensions have been coined themselves over and over lately, and the folks keep begging for more - so why not?Owl City is Adam Young's alter ego. The shy Minnesotan has found his own night-flying superhero sound, even if it was stamped with another zip code.http://www.myspace.com/o...

What Media and Press are saying about AoA

"Marrying the vibey, seductively ethereal textures of lounge, dub and trance with the timeless verities of great pop and rock songwriting, Astronauts of Antiquity have bridged various musical worlds to create a realm all their own. And while their journey has taken them around the globe, on their new album, Rocket Science For Dummies, they have brought it all back home, delivering an album that...

Song of the Day: Rhys Chatham – “A Crimson Grail: Part 1”

Few would dub Rhys Chatham a simplistic musician. A guitar player and composer, he began creating experimental pieces for large "guitar orchestras" in New York City in the late 1970's, working with fellow avant-garde guitarists like Sonic Youth godfather Glenn Branca. In 2005, Chatham was commissioned by the city of Paris to create A Crimson Grail for the Nuit Blanche Festival, an annual all-ni...

Summer secrets

On Friday I head off on holiday, and for the first time I'm going solo. From the UK to Ferighey near Budapest, and then onto the Hungarian capital for a couple of days, before a train journey to Prague for a short trip, back to 'pest, a day at Sziget Festival (Placebo and Manic Street Preachers) and then home. It's a pretty grand undertaking. Over 20 hours will be spent on some form of transpor...

Telefon Tel Aviv - Immolate Yourself (Bpitch Control)

[Editors Note: I tried writing about it. Multiple times. I tried avoiding it. I felt obliged. I tried not to listen. But listened anyway. At the end, I found these words by Sarah Badr.]What follows below is a review for an album whose title has been rendered regretfully apt. The sudden passing of Telefon Tel Aviv's Charlie Cooper only two days after the group released their long-awaited third f...
