looking on the bright side, too-lazy lovers and broken kitchen taps aside, at least I finally bought a Smiths album!

Witness Richard Ashcroft's expansive voice on this classic tearjerking Britpop ballad. Nick McCabe's guitar touches fill out the song as beautifully as the original's orchestral strings.

"The Impresario" ("Der Schauspieldirektor") was written in response to a commission by Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II as a competition piece pitting Italian opera against the traditional German singspiel. The competing opera was the opera buffa "Prima la musica, poi le parole" ("First the Music, Then the Words") by Antonio Salieri. The first performance of "The Impresario" and the Salieri operas ...

The finale is set in the same tempo marking as the finale of the 1756 concerto. The atmosphere is more merry, however than the earlier work with all of the qualities we know about Haydn (his sense of humor and leading the audience down the wrong path, etc.) making their appearance.

The circumstances surrounding the present concerto for organ are even more complex than the one for the 1756 work. To begin with, the work was not found in either of Haydn's catalogues of his own music. Rick and Dean both put out more than one country album. Rick had real knowledge and appreciation for country music, while Dean generally seemed pretty awkward and ...

The above pretty well sums up the music. And those of us in love with it all understand it perfectly. We sing silently and dance as if no one were looking. We're the ones on the transit system with eyes closed and head bouncing, imperceptibly to the music. Oh to have headphones at times like those. I, like many others, always have a song going in my head. And for reasons I cannot even begin to...

JJ Cale's bona fides have long since been established. A songwriter of wit & insight & a guitarist of understated grace. This ain't no rocknroll...this is smoldering gold, glowing hot, branding the night air with shiney diamond riffs. Elegant & gracefull yet still within sight of the garage rock which anchors all.Enjoy...if the friggin mog player thing will ever come off the injured reserve ...

A chance diversion into a coffee shop in Budapest's fifth district bought me back into contact with this sumptuous club anthem (and #2 hit in the UK) from 2002. It has danced back and forth across my brain for the last fortnight or so, and once you listen to it, it'll probably do the same thing to you.
