DJ Frank Niao got angry at his MC, b.phlecksi parmellla for fronting on his lyrics, claiming that he wasn't repping the true East Bay Step. So the underground punk-rapper b.phlecksi returns with a strong submission for Frank's Summer debut EP, ReSEARCH on Berkeley's d'oiseaux recordings.

A.R. Rahman has a great looking website. Seems to be a bit of a work in progress at the moment.
http://www.arrahman.com/
And here is a Rahman tune by the Bollywood Brass Band. More because I wanted some more brass than because I particularly like it. (Thanks Hermes for getting me back to the brass.)

When I was a student in the early seventies this song (from the CSN album)was a big juke-box favourite. This live version is not so hi-fi but still sounds great to my ears

I was flipping through the music on my hard drive to find something to listen to, and came across this track I hadn't listened to in a while: "Come As You Are," as recorded by jazz fusion guitarist Charlie Hunter on his Blue Note CD Bing, Bing, Bing!. I think it's rather entertaining, so I thought I'd upload it (as a change from my regular stream of review-only posts...) This also kind of leads in to what he would do a few years later--jazz covers of more mainstream music s... MORE

was always a Bob Marley soundalike - indeed, back in the early 60s Pipe and the Schoolboys (from whom the Wailing Souls developed) were rivals to the Wailin' Wailers at Saturday morning talent contests. Here he is in the early seventies on Studio One covering another Marley tune from the Lee Perry years... MORE

Humbly I add my contribution to the Bob covers. I love this album because we get to hear some of those uplifting Bob quotes.
This track is recorded by Busta Rhymes and the Flipmode squad.

Finally I visited the long awaited turntable marathon session of Mr. Scruff in the Koko in Camden (London). The whole thing began at 9 pm and lasted until 3 am when they closed the club.
First of all I have to say that the Koko is a wonderful location. I would even go so far to say that it is the most beautiful club, that I have seen so far. Held in bordeaux red, what happens to be one of my favorite colours, and beeing a former theatre from around 1900 is ha... MORE

My daughter is a rock star in training...she's 8, plays the guitar and loves music. And when I deem it appropriate, I take her to the city to see a show. About a month ago it was Rilo Kiley. Bella's first song she could play on her guitar was Moneymaker, and she's working on Picture of Success right now, so she was excited to see the band. I liked the thought of her seeing a real female rocker in Jenny Lewis...consider it my offensive attack in the battle against Hann... MORE

So, lately I've gone back to ripping my vinyl collection. A process that has been ongoing now for a few years, as it's one of those "pick it up and then put it down" projects. It takes some time and patience but it's always well worth it in the end.
One of the albums I randomly pulled out was from my childhood, usually played as part of a rainy Sunday afternoon cleaning-fest soundtrack. Since today was a Sunday and it was raining, I thought it would be an appropriate c... MORE

It's a beautiful Sunday afternoon here in Austin, Texas. I know that before i know it, daytime highs will be pushing 100 degreees...but until then, it is 80 and i am going to see Wilco in a few hours at an outdoor venue.
So sunny day and I start thinking about the 10cc song "Dreadlock Holiday" a great reggae song by a non-reggae band - that is featured prominently in the film "Snatch" and by Bob Fossil in the "Killeroo" episode of "The Mighty Boosh".
This has me thinking of... MORE
