From the liner notes: Weinstock asked me to play some slow blues," Red recalls, "and this theme popped into my mind. In between periods of experimenting with new music, Bud Shank also appeared as a session player, his flute or alto sax being heard on the soundtracks of "The Sandpiper," "The Thomas Crown Affair," and the Bruce Brown surfer movies "Slippery When Wet" and "Barefoot Adventure."
Death came swiftly to Bud Shank on April 2, 2009 when he died in his sleep at his home in Tuczon, AZ of a pulmonary embolism following a return to his home following a recording session in Los Angeles. His wife Linda told the press that he knew it was the end of his career as his doctors told him that if he went to the sessions, he would not be expected to live. A lifetime crammed with work as ...
In the early years of his career, Bud Shank doubled on flute which had just as much success as he did on sax. By early 1982, Shank stopped playing the flute and concentrated instead on his alto sax where his fluid, imaginative and angular, daring solos became his trademark for the rest of his life.
Shank also recorded in 1986 an album of concertos for alto sax and orchestra with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2005, Shank formed his own big band and played at the 40th Anniversary concert celebrating Stan Kenton's Neophonic Orchestra, one that fused the worlds of jazz and classical music with some exciting listening for serious music lovers of all inclinations.

In later years, he focused on playing alto saxophone exclusively and also was a well known clinician. Keeping up with the times, he also worked as ...

Toshiko Akiyoshi needs little introduction to any fan of Jazz. Her band was one of the longest-standing house bands at the famous, and now defunct, Birdland in New York. This number is one of many reasons why. It has all the trademarks, including the common feature of any Akiyoshi arrangement: she has five saxophones, and she'll be damned if she has any two of them playing the same note at the ...
With "Blue York," SwingSet pondered its move to New York and the angst of being geographically apart from each other. We had spent so much time playing together(in Jax,Fl) that the thought of moving to New York was disturbing. We had known, from early on, after a short period of time, that we worked well together. So when Milan and I moved to New York in 1995, Vince moved the following year. Gr...
Bangladesh takes care of production duties on a new track for Jamie Fox entitled "Speak French" featuring Gucci Mane. BASS BASS BASS OOO AHHH. This is an urban radio smash as far as we're concerned. Gucci Mane and Foxx sweat pure swag and vibes of braggadocio in this song. They ride the deep bassline as smooth [...]
