Top 5 Records for Cold Weather/Winter

Posted over 5 years ago
h2. Winter AlbumsAs it has been teriffically cold around here lately, and I'm currently tucked in snuggly to bed, I figured it'd be appropriate to post a Top 5 Records for Cold Weather blog...in ascending order:5. Iron & Wine - Woman King EP4. Death Cab For Cutie - Transatlanticism3. Ryan Adams - Love is Hell2. Wilco - Being There (Disc 2)1. Jesse Malin - The Fine Art of Self DestructionI really haven't come to pinpoint exactly what it is is about Malin's album that makes it so absolutely appropriate for cold weather listening - the only thing I can figure is association factor. I first started listening to it about 2 years ago when a couple friends of mine and I took a road trip to Chicago to see Ryan Adams (Jesse Malin wound up playing with him too). Either way, it was cold, and it was Chicago...one of those perfect situations; whether or not you were freezing your appendages off. And sure there are songs on the album that scream winter listening, like "Xmas"...and "Solitaire," I suppose its just the inherent, honest melancholy that gets me.There are other albums, too, that I find myself listening to during winter, but they didnt really fit alongside the others: like George Winston's +December+, or the "Amelie" soundtrack by Yann Tiersen...and then typical jazz stuff (Guaraldi in particular) - always good for winter. And a lot of stuff by Tegan and Sara, and Rachael Yamagata is pretty darn appropriate for winter in my book. Anyways, if you happen upon this mog, feel free to list your Top 5 - I'd be interested to hear. Au Revoir.

  5. poorplaces says jesse used to be in the new york (i believe) punk scene, so he's still got that kind of voice...and its apparent on a lot of his songs. but he's - lately - been more along the lines of alt-country/pop - really simple songwriting but incredibly catchy... kind of in the same vein as ryan adams, but jesse's a little more poprock than ryan. but ya, if you were to check him out i'd suggest something off the fine art of self destruction - maybe "solitaire" or "brooklyn."

  7. agriz says Jesse Malin is insanely good...great pick. ''Downliner' is my personal favorite. I've heard that Ryan Adams produced his record because Malin was willing to give him an unlimited open bar tab at his bar Niagra in the east village...I have no idea if that's true. Anyway, very New York and a truly unique voice. I'd like to add Red House Painter's 'Songs for a Blue Guitar' as my favorite cold weather album...
