WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

ANOTHER PLACE AND TIME

Posted over 3 years ago
Sounds drift from the television in the livingroom. Traveling like a cloud, down the hallway, taking a right towards my ears into the bedroom where I am computing. A playful techno beat with a synth keyboard bounce. A thoughtful lyric begs me to investigate:>And everywhere I go,There's always something to remind meOf another place and timeThe music from the Geico commercial with the caveman in the airport is one of those songs that I have been meaning to investigate, and add to the poet plant soundtrack. The ad it is a smart combination of sound and picture. Just the right amount of humor, irony, and class to make it stand out from the sludge.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZrjr4A-ASQ&mode=related&searchHearing just the sound the other night, I decided the time was right to learn more about the song that so fittingly highlighted the hurt and isolation that this caveman (or everyman) was feeling. I started typing the lyrics into the search engine and discovered that it was a song called “Remind Me” by a Norwegian duo known as Royksopp. This song originally came out in 2002 and it was the first single from their debut album “Melody A.M.” The song reached #21 in the U.K. charts and an innovative video was made for the song produced by H5. Their video won best music video in the MTV Europe Music Awards (2002).http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHEIvF1U4PMSo now I know about a song because of a commercial. What made the filmmaker chose this song? Whatever the reason, the end product works and as a result my gears have turned and now I know about a great song, and the bands eye catching video. I also discovered a parody of the Geico ad that I will share with my eldest daughter for no other reason than comic relief.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Br_b4NgpyxwIt is always good to end with a smile.

  1. Heli0tr0pe says Nope - that line 'There’s always something to remind me' belongs to Burt Bacharach (the author) and then whatever one-hit wonder group did the famous cover of it in the early '80s (Naked Eyes?). Royksopp? Please.
