UNPACKED MY ADJECTIVES
Thought you might be interested in the sounds that move poet plant press behind the scenes. Music is a journey and everyday new sounds can be found and old tunes can be rediscovered. Courtney openned up the entertainment section of last Friday's paper and said "look at that guy playing two saxophones at the same time!". She was talking about Jeff Coffin from Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. He was playing a show in town (Saint Augustine) with Flecktone bandmate Futureman (drums). There were still tickets left on the day of the show (Nov 10) so we made a date. If you ever get a change to see Jeff play you should. When he plays his tenor and alto sax at the same time it sounds clean not sloppy. It may seem like a gimmick, but Jeff has got the talent to back up the flash. WIth Kofi Burbridge of Derek Trucks Band on flute and keyboards, and Felix Pastorius (son of the late, great Jaco Pastorius) on bass, this quartet is a certifiable "supergroup". The location of the show added a level of excitement. A fifth element to the quartet. The Alcazar is the actual site of the swimming pool from when the building was a turn of the century hotel. The pool floor sloops from what was once the deep end creating natural raked seating leading to the stage area at the shallow end. Complete with a skylight, a grand staircase, and balcony the atmosphere screams with class. This event was made possible by the St. Johns Cultural Council.
