MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

(94)

i was just reading a lovely post by mogger Bartleby [http://mog.com/Bartleby/blog_post/145364] that then brought to mind some lovelorn music by a man who can do no wrong in my book. his name is Mark Kozelek. immediately i wanted to post but my dilemma was that i do my most awful writing about my most loved music - for the simple reason that i haven't the words and lexical faculties to express the countless sensations, delirium, and meltdowns such music causes upon me, and i know that if i did, i would love it less. thus, i offer you this very evasive and impassive post about two songs that in truth drum a tempest of emotions further into me. in addition, consider it an introduction to the album Songs for a Blue Guitar by Red House Painters, if you haven't already listened to that one.

Songs for a Blue Guitar is the first RHP album I was introduced to in 2001 which began my love affair with Mark Kozelek and all that he does. Beautiful album and, as always, great covers. "Silly Love Songs" is one of my favorite AM radio songs from my childhood. Thanks for sharing, poe! :j

You know, this cover is so different from the original, I don't think you can even call it a cover, more like an inspirational addendum. Quite Niel Young-ish and enyoyed hereabouts. Thanks!!

As Scot said, that's a very interesting cover from Macca's little tune. If I may venture a big word, I'll say Mr Kozelek's version lends gravitas to an otherwise innocuous song.

What I meant to say in regards to music inspired by lovelornness is that beyond the feelings (which one may or may not share) it's the sheer beauty of such works that touches and moves us.

Thank you for this bitter-sweet (and very flattering) post.

LOL!!! Bartleby - the use gravitas in this post... just ... classic.

Poe: I think that this song barely resembles the original - in a good way - and I love the original... thanks!

jnif: yes, beautiful album. i got to listen to the RHP albums chronologically and must say Mark Kozelek's growth as a songwriter gave me real insight on the difference between juvenile angst and grown-up disenchantment. (can you tell i love him to pieces? ;D)

scott: true, Mr. M. K. is known for his "far-fetched" covers (the way Tori Amos is in her own circles), which have also included AC/DC, The Cars, John Denver. one of my favorites is his cover of Shock Me by Kiss - i so wanted to post it here but i left all my RHP albums (save one) back home.

michael: i believe you just laid the hammer down on the innocuity of Macca's timeless hit and i can't stop laughing. i will take MK's addition of gravitas as a good thing. i hear you: when a creative expression of pain is celebrated, it is because of its beauty beyond its source of inspiration.

van: i agree, LOL on gravitas, i never could have come up with that one myself. "barely resembles" "in a good way" is an opinion i share with you. i will add that MK is also an awe-inspiring troubadour, especially through his latter RHP work and with a band called Sun Kil Moon.

jonathan: i am as surprised as you are. the email notif said "ciphermedia posted a comment..." and i was like "rhp? no way...?" but i am always glad to confirm that none of us should be stereotyped. (; btw, happy to see you still mogging tho i know you're enjoying life outside mog right now.

to everyone, i was going to include this in the post but forgot: one busy middle of the day at work i happened to open Google News to do a quick look-up and thought to myself, "hmm. looks like a major Venereal Disease news story today..." it wouldn't be another few hours until i realized the "VD" all over headlines meant you know what. i am a freak, i know it.

Would have to say that I'm more lurking than mogging at the moment, Poe. And the pile of notifications in my inbox far outstrips my ability at the moment to participate. But every so often I stick my head up to say hello...
