MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

(54)

of Rob Crow's schizophrenia, of his Big Bang, of his viral marketing, Heavy Vegetable was the very beginning. it was, in the words of Gogol Bordello (in heavy rotation last week), his Supertheory of Supereverything. his first band ever; with whom he released his first published music ever, an EP, at age 22. and i am not just throwing metaphors in the air here - the name of that 1993 debut EP? A Bunch of Stuff.

some might say Rob Crow spread himself too thin after the first band. i might agree 20% but i also think multiple personalitites co-exist only as a disorder. Heavy Vegetable was to uninhibited as Pinback, his most active band to date, is to accomplished. the two make a study in contrast and i offer you names, to start: Autumn of the Seraphs vs. Mondo Aqua Kitty. come on, hit me with the bipolar sketch.

wait, am i offending anyone with any political incorrectness towards psychoses? alright, we're all normal and i'm paranoid. but back to cuckoo Rob. listen to their minute-songs, i ask you, and tell me Heavy Vegetable was not the Grand Unification of Rob Crow. and then he set forth and multiplied. consider this, a track i love, from Frisbie:

Heavy Vegetable had Rob Crow sharing frontman duties with vocalist Eléa Tenuta, with whom he would later form his second band, Thingy. either band made music influenced heavily by Slint, of whom both Rob and Eléa were fans, such as this other track from Frisbie called Still Moving:

Ilay. Wonderful post. I really appreciate this post. I have never heard these songs and I am a Rob Crow/Pinback fan. You are awesome. You are going to be hearing from ketut with your Donnie Darko reference. He is a huge DD fan.

Three fantastic songs! Eléa Tenuta has quite a lovely voice, and Rob Crow (in all his fractured guises) is an interesting talent. Must add the frisbie album to the collection. Much appreciated. Cheers.

Ok, I'm starting to worry about you knowing so much about Rob Crow. ;-) That may be a psychoses on it's own.

micki: "You’re a right cheeky poe today" - yay, i love that! luvs back to ya, i imagine the Henry Mancini number funkisizing the L.A. side of you. (;

mike: scuze me but i have far more appreciation for you this week, no contest. (wink wink) me huge DD fan! i think i watch that movie once every 6 months.

cynthia: "in all his fractured guises" – very well said! i agree about Eléa, her voice is perfect for the deadpan quirky deranged type their music may be going for.

pat: that, he is. i've heard quite a few of his solo stuff, too (not enough to have an opinion on the albums), and i've really liked the little i know.

Lady Miss: nice one. bite me but i always look forward to your comments, luv your 'wit'! what psychoses? my Rob Crow altar is so bare, it's nothing to be alarmed about. ;D
