WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

SOS - name this tune

Posted over 2 years ago
it's a catchy if throwaway song i had included in many a dancey mix tape i made back in the '80s. i keep thinking it's a song called Japan by the group Japan (ebuzzmiller's recent post on the band brought me back my mind-boggler.) but there isn't any reference to such a song on the Internet. in any case, the chorus does repeatedly say 'Japan'.i recall the melody quite clearly, and most of the lyrics - which i now post here, hoping one Mogger out there can attest that i am not imagining things. (i really have spent some time Googling these lyrics online before disturbing your peace.) (and, no, i do not mean Alphaville's Big in Japan.)do you know this song? It's a new kind of war, it's the war of todayI can't wait anymore but I can't go far away??{refrain}Sending out an SOS to youStanding here, it could be just too lateSending out an SOS to youWe are heading to a ruthless placeNow the danger's inside youThe situation is brand newDon't you know it's not _ _?{chorus}Japan, JapanJapan, JapanThe future is today

  1. poebegone says my mystery song isn't an unforgettable song - at best, it is an obscure song with a trendy sound from a certain time. no one i've asked even remotely knows it, and this may be where my frustration-turned-fixation comes from. as far as the sound goes, it is English (British) New Wave from the mid-'80s - along the lines of B-Movie, or Romeo Void from the US. possibly it sounds closest to the marginal UK hit Chenko (Tenka-Io) by Red Box. hell, i could be wrong about any of this. it was too long ago. and i do tend to have imaginary friends.

  2. ebuzzmiller says wow, i'm totally stumped Poe. no idea whatsoever......so much for me being a self proclaimed obscure 80's expert :-) i can't think of any songs from the 80's that repeat the word "Japan" in the chorus, other than the aforementioned Alphaville track. i have plenty of imaginary friends, but none of them are helping me with this....

  3. poebegone says naww, ebuzz, you are the crowned majesty of the '80s. i might've sniffed too much eye makeup trying to look like Siouxsie Sioux back then and imagined the damn song in my heady head. =D

  6. 23platypi says Hi: I know it's been awhile since you posted this question, but I find myself in the EXACT same place....I need to find out the artist for this song, and for some weird reason it's nonexistent on the interwebs. I'll do ya one better, though....I have the mp3. It's titled as being by The Creatures, which I'm about 99% sure is innacurate because it doesn't sound anything like them. Did anyone ever answer this? Chris chris@chrisandjackie.com

  7. poebegone says hey Chris. as amusing as it sounds, i have been looking for (or at least wondering about) that song across 2 decades now, imagine that. unfortunately, without success. like you, i highly doubt it is The Creatures, doesn't sound like them at all, although i am curious as to how you found the mislabelled mp3. i must say i am quite stoked by that mp3 - it means you can upload it here on mog, post it up, and maybe get a response. a huge part of why this post got not much reaction is that i hardly knew anyone back then (been only 2 months active). say, was it you who wrote me on gmail asking the same question? if it was, i must apologize for not having replied sooner. i kept meaning to. but hooray to your mp3, let me know if you've decided to put it up and i'll do my best to help make some noise.

Chris, this is the best piece of news i've heard all week. * humongous sigh of relief * WOW, thank you. i started to have hope when you got me the mp3, then started losing it again as i failed to follow your new lead. this is truly amazing. thanks, too, for the equally marvellous links. i have now found some more links by Googling up "the creatures italo disco" - not that it ever would have occured to me in a million years to combine the band and the genre as search words. i know you are not exactly a mogger but i could not help but share with my online friends here the perfect ending to my two-decade quest - http://mog.com/poebegone/blog_post/142765
