funeral

1- Suzanne Vega : Song of Sand : 99.9 F°

What stinging tune could split this endless noon and make the sky swell with rain?

2- Tori Amos : Purple People : Spark (Single)

Breakfast, every hour, it could save the world.

3- Portishead : It's a Fire : Dummy

So breathe on, little sister, breathe on.

4- Joni Mitchell : Blue : Blue

Underneath the skin, an empty space to fill in. Well, there are so many sinking now.

5- Jeff Buckley : Lover, You Should've Come Over : Grace

It's never over. She's a tear that hangs inside my soul forever.

6- PJ Harvey feat. Thom Yorke : The Mess We're In : Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea

I'd thank you. I don't think we will meet again, and you must leave now.

7- Mazzy Star : Take Everything : Among My Swan

You're just waiting for her to come apart. You're just waiting for her.

8- Ani DiFranco : Cloud Blood : To the Teeth

Dry-eyed, trying hard to resist sleep's first kiss. Everytime I have time to think, I think of this.

9- Ida : Blizzard of '78 : The Braille Night

Winter went out with a whimper, such a lonely sound to try to get around.

10- Red House Painters : Song for a Blue Guitar : Songs for a Blue Guitar

When everything we felt fails, then some music, soft and distant, sails...

11- Nick Drake : Hazey Jane I : Bryter Layter

Try to be true even if it's only in your hazey way.

12- Kate Bush : Nocturn : Aerial: A Sky of Honey

We tire of the city, we tire of it all. We long for just that something more.

  1. Samuel says Blizzard of '78 is my favorite Ida song. Overall, this is a great collection, regardless of what caused it. I will be sure to add these to my "Sad Bastard Music" playlist (which never seems to lack new songs). I hope that you soon find happiness in someone who deserves your companionship.

  2. poebegone says Samuel, thanks. it is my favorite Ida song, too. i was overwhelmed by it the first time i listened to it and thought it was the most beautiful sound, and those were the most beautiful words, i'd heard in a long time. the idea of having a “Sad Bastard Music” playlist (which i am certain will never lack new songs) is a winner. it made me laugh for a few seconds before gloom set in again. thanks for that as well.

  3. Samuel says Don't lose hope. You don't want to end up old and cynical like me (my picture is a wee bit outdated). Anyways, no matter what the sad songs say, there is someone out there for you. It's just a matter of finding them, convincing them that you are meant for eachother, and being able to find eachothers quirks endearing, not annoying. I'm sure there's more to it, but I apparently don't know what it is since I am, as previously mentiond, old and cynical.

  4. Kinoshawk says Wow. Some really great songs here. Sorry to hear about the situation but I just had to comment on the collection. "It's A Fire" is by far my favorite Portishead song, "The Mess We're In" is just one amazing track on an incredible record, and the Nick Drake song you've chosen is so wonderful. Keep the faith.

  5. poebegone says Kinoshawk, thanks. aww, you Moggers are sweet; allow the grieving girl one virtual group hug in this moment of weakness filled with things i never would've done in a million years. for example, i never would've ever liked to parade my pain in all its semi-detailed mundanity on a blog, but half of me is glad to have done it because i knew there will be those of you out there digging this mix. (thanks for telling me so.) as you might imagine, an extremely crushing situation as above would call for only my extremely favorite artists together in a mix. not surprisingly, the songs here by Suzanne Vega, Portishead, Joni Mitchell, Jeff Buckley, Ida, RHP, and Nick Drake are my favorites of those artists; the rest are in my top five of those artists. Samuel: "being able to find each other's quirks endearing, not annoying" - then you know what it is a matter of, and i hope back everything you hope for me.
