the longest minute ever told

Posted about 3 years ago

The last time I woke up to music and it was perfect was this morning. The exercise began the exact same way it has begun for two years. Without ceremony I opened my eyes and turned my head to the unfolded laptop by my right. It offered the exact same view: the iTunes Artwork screen saver and the time. 7:01 a.m. and like always, I wore headphones from the night before. No differently, I hit the escape key to wake the MacBook from sleep and display tunes in grid view.

There, surely, rolls the moment that either moves life minutely or reserves it; the moment of choosing a song to play without thinking. A) free, B) save. It is an ephemeral moment for who has willingness to spare? Arrows up, arrows down, hesitation, click. Anything, really, that isn't your least liked. And hurry. You want to commence your day before ambition comes upon you to not start it at all.

By the eighth song, you will be onto something else and the choice will not matter but, until then, that you played something you've played often before and everything came together, just then, the rarest bit of perfection will have lingered.

This morning it was The Sun & the Neon Light. It embarked on beats ready for war if not idled by furtive ambience and piano that faded under, faster than I could mouth sentimental. I became aware of window-screened sunlight beating on walls, surviving the quietest of air-conditioning. I thought to myself, I'd like a warm chocolate chip muffin and it's time to change bedsheets, and I felt victorious.

    infectiuos melody line in that opener. kind of feels like it never quite completes, and the breathy sample seems to anticipate it will, now...or maybe now...or...
    So Much For the Afternoon is about what I said yesterday, somehow maybe the quickest 4 hours ever, and this 3:16 was gone just that quick. a sure sign my brain likes it...the rest will catch up.....thanks!

    The last good rave I was at was Booka Shade's Dublin gig. Over a year ago now, but the kaloidoscopic memories are still fresh. The new album didn't grab me like their first. But this bouncy little track is a nice pick me up (or, indeed, wake me up).

    Yea, that's a very pleasant warm up tune. I don't pay that much attention to the first song of the day . . . anything'll do.

    With the right tune and a beautifully filtered sun through one's window curtains makes a great start to anyone's day:)

    That's quite a routine.

    Be careful with those headphones and sleeping.  Why not speakers. Ah because you're a traveler.

    Scott - Redemption felt complete to me. it completed my decision to follow waking up with nothing. :}

    Colin - i agree. although it has its moments, this album does not pack a punch like early Booka Shade. it was just what i needed!

    Neill - i do. shame on me, i can not help myself. i seem to think the machine is my appendage.

    Galen - i knew you'd understand the poetry behind starting a day. beautifully filtered sun it was. (;

    Aug - neither do i. so i am really pleased when a random selection turns out to be a perfect listen.

    Mike - for those of us who are erratic sleepers, great wake-up tunes certainly earn a shout-out!

    lak - you got it. speakers or a desktop computer are a bad idea because i keep moving around.

    That is nice. I don't know Booka well but it sounds like they have softened it up a bit.

    BTW if I slept with headphones on I would end up stranggled, I don't know how you do it.

    Now I know how you are a one woman encyclopedia of all that is hip, new, and fresh - and of course, worth listening to... I figured you listened all the time, but day and night? :)

    Amiel, this album in particular is very laid-back house. heheh, i get strangled sometimes, but mostly have killed headphones prematurely as the poor wires get pulled all over.

    Van, i just outed a nasty habit, haven't i? and when i'm on the move, i have my phone player so headphones are still stuck to my ears!

    If listening to music non-stop is a nasty habit - then I'm guilty too... if I could do it in business meetings etc... I would, but you know, I'm forced to have _some boundaries. ;)
