Not contrary to popular opinion, I listen to everything, mad voices in my head and pop. 'fraid so - even uppity upbeat cheerio pop. Just hit play already and you'll know what I mean. (Not you, Cody. Clap your ears at once, it's '80s synth pop ish.) The rest of you, hang on to your doorknob, this will shrill and spill, and hurt your head, it will.
I have to say it's funny, almost religiously funny, how these tunes came to me. The other day I was wishing real hard for pop on speed. And these landed on my lap(top) just like that. Love when that happens.
Pop is a damn extremist. When it's bad, it's bad. (Not according to British Sea Power.) When it's good, it's always trying to change the world. Not for fame nor validation, I don't think, but some other justification I will not ever fully grasp.
I wish this band, Immaculate Machine, could have pursued the direction they were taking in the songs I upped here. They could be, like, The New Pornographers (circa Mass Romantic) (with which vocalist-keyboardist Kathryn Calder also works) or Mates of State or The Magic Numbers of hyper pop.
Only, half the tracks on both albums I've heard - 2006's Ones and Zeros and 2007's Immaculate Machine's Fables - were going a whole other route. You got Owen Pallett and Alex Kapranos contributing in Fables, and that's always a plus, but, I don't know, there is that other half that sounds all antithetical.
Ah, the downfall of pop. Giving up the folly of youth for something so ... opposite.
But what do you do? You can lash out on pop but, by the time you're done, aren'tcha going to be all posted out? Really I am. I make peace 's what I do. Not the likeliest of things but here is jolly good pop from me today. It's catchy stuff, just take it for what it is and none else.
Not to end on a rather elliptical note, the music also reminds me of this. You're going to laugh. Fond memory (or not) for the 30-somethings...

That is a great track, and I like I always say, pop is not a dirty word
The keyboards are not so dominant as to be detrimental and those drums and guit fiddles are real as can be. I have no problems with these folks. Nice One.
poe you nailed this one. I was thinking more like Blondie or X 'Dear Confessor' certainaly has that vibe , I don't even know who SSQ is.
I'd like to hear more if you know what I mean. wink, wink.
I am with JoxBridge & Chris... Pop is not a dirty word - just means POPULAR !!! Nothing wrong with that when it comes to music...
Give us more... nudge nudge ;)
How's yer Mom doing ?!?
...hurt my head? This was pretty tame... well, for this pineapple head anyway...
great tune. i dig it.
I've taken it for what it is and it's very enjoyable! And so is your casual chat about it. I do like your style poebegone.
Poppycalifragilisticespyaladoshious!!!! I stand guilty of the pleasures of pop(raising one hand). Good, catchy choons ii, thanks. Not heard of these guys or SSQ either(but then again I grew up in assbackwards bumfuck egypt, otherwise known as Portland, Oregon in the '60-'96 & the radio stations only played top 40 crap, so if it didn't float to the top of the toilet charts, we didn't hear it. And they finally got an alternative rock station in '90, friggin' 1990! Can you believe that? Christ! And now they're one of the hip epicenters of music, after I left, go figure).
Poppies in the field aren't bad, necessarily. I have partaken and the grin lingers still. And yet, taken to often or in overly large doses: rehab or death. Thanks for your frollicking insights; those are fun.
Jox - real important to have a Jox-approved pop track on my side.
"pop" is certainly not as dirty a word as, say, "happy" ;p
Cody - nothing detrimental whatsoever from me.
anytime i can make you listen to synth pop is like one hurdle overcome. hah!
Chris - did you lose your spell check again? (same goes to you, SunshineDaydream!)
i'd have pegged Blondie as artsier (or do i not know them at all?) but am seconding you on X. good one. SSQ - not to be mentioned to punk friends lest you get beaten up for knowing 'em. (remembering the anti-pop Oi! local scene of yesteryears.)
Lizzie - "POPULAR" - a scary word.
my mom... well, here's a picture from noontime yesterday. i was chasing deadlines and troubleshooting, and anytime i have a minute to spare for breathing, i forego breathing and spend the spare minute on texting her and sis back and forth. they were at the hospital, her taking tests that are hoped to finally return definitive results. the waiting kills. but i am having a good morning, thanks for asking, beloved sis.
Van - seriously, the shrilly singing and overdose of decibels did not your hurt your head just a little? sure, it's not thrash metal, but i still got a Slurpee kind of brain freeze.
Jeff - dug!
Helen - do i wear "casual chat" well, ya think? i am sooo up for a break from the scarifying writing, i swear. i think i am going to bask in your overall sunshine goodness for a while here.
Aug - your comment alone is worth posting this post. clap your hands and say yeah, pop! see SSQ explanation 5 comments up. that is so funny about Portland, truly a hip epicenter of the present. "assbackwards bumfuck egypt" - it's been 5 minutes and i haven't stopped laughing.
Klyde - what's not to love about the entire comment you left? "And yet, taken to often or in overly large doses: rehab or death." - dude, that's what i'm talking about. everything in moderation. i badly need practice in that department.
Don't we all.
What a nice Sunday morning pick-me-up!
glad you like, Pekka. it's so damn catchy i can't stop listening to it. (;
